As much as I appreciate The Simpsons and South Park, it is unfortunate what those two massively popular shows have wrought – a dozen or more animated programs that try too hard to capture the pop culture references, anarchic sensibilities and bawdy humor and falter right out of the gate.

So it is with Drawn Together. The show has a mildly funny concept about putting a variety of cartoon characters together in a house a la The Real World and Big Brother. What comes out though is something akin to the ramblings of a 13-year-old after a binge of energy drinks and Cocoa Puffs. The pace is exhausting, with jokes and commentary shooting by amid an avalanche of curse words and bodily humor.

I'm not against humor of this kind, only when it is handled with all the subtlety of a Jackson Pollack canvas. The TV shows and movies of this kind that work, give the audience moments of pause, a bit of heart and a lot less reliance on pure grotesqueries masked as entertainment. This show misses the mark entirely on all counts.
