Review

I, Robot, is a film loosely based on a story by Isaac Asimov. Science fiction fans cridge over this interpretation but Hollywood has a tendency to do this a lot. It's no surprise to me that this film's plot line is miles away from the original story but it is still a great way to spend two hours. This blu-ray disc starring Will SMith as a cop in 2035 Chicago longs for the good old days before robots were so prevelant in modern society, as is portrayed in the opening minutes of the film. Once we get past his attitude and suspicions of the latest model that will arrive in a few days, Smth investigates the apparant suicide of a scientist (James Cromwell) who has worked for the robot company, run by the richest man in the world (Bruce Greenwood). Bridget Moynahan, who worked with Cromwell, is assigned to help Smith with his investigation. Son they discover a rogue robot who is suspected of killing the scientist.

The blu-ray presentation is outstanding in picture quality. Details, such as the inner workings of "Sonny", the robot are crystal clear. This is another fine show off disc for 1080p systems.

Smith delivers another solid performance as the cop with the chip on his shoulder (literally) and a prejudice against machines. There are many fine action sequences; my favorite is when the robots attack Smith's car on the underground freeway. The CGI special effects are all totally believable.

Audio is also remarkable with DTS HDMA lossless the default for English. This action film benefits from such a dynamic soundtrack and a surround system will get a workout with this disc.

Extras take advantage of the colored buttons on your blu-ray remote but are pretty standard fair. FOx has simply divided the extras to use these function keys. On the red button, we get the featurettes on special effects creation,an alternate ending and deleted scenes. The green button is for commentary, and you have a choice of 3 full length commentaries. The yellow button has an annotated guide and trivia track, and blue has a search index, plus D-Box and personal scenes selections.

Will Smith fans are getting their money's worth thisw month and this is a second strong title for Smith and Fox on Blu-ray. While the film continues to have a love-hate relationship with its audiences, I found it to be entertaining and another great high definition show off disc.
