Will Smith delivers a powerful performance in this Richard Matheson story, which is the third adaptation of his novel being brought to the screen. The blu-ray presentation is another fine example of what the format can do and Warner has done a superb job with this release.

Smith plays a scientist who somehow is immune to a virus which has taken over the world and reduced the majority of the population into albino, light sensitive vampire like crea tures. Smith works in his fortified apartment to help find a cure but has come up without a solution in 3 years of research. He experiments on virus infected rats but also looks for plague infected humans when possible. His walls are lined with the photos of his experiments and his failures. Through flashbacks, we learn how the Earth was devatated and what hapened to Smith's family. While Smith is alone through most of the film, he does have a faithful German Shepard that is his companion, who helps Smith hunt deer in the city streets.

The film has a number of memorable scenes but by far the scariest for me was when his dog runs after a deer into a dark, abandoned building, which Smith has yet to explore. The tense scene as he explores in the dark is gut churning. Another is when Smith captures a plague infected female and sedates her on his lab table only to have her show her defiance to his observations.

The effects are good but the creatures look a bit too much CGI; both animals and human virus victims just don't have that realistic look of other films. Blu-ray obviously brings this out even more through its added high resolution detail.

The soundtrack is Dolby digital HD, which while powerful, is not DTS HD MA, which has a more powerful impact. However, the surround is still effective in several scenes of action.

The disc comes with both the original theatrical version and the alternative version, complete with different ending. Both versions are available once the disc is loaded in your player.

Warner has loaded the disc with extras, including a 50 minute documentary an various aspects of the film, which are available to view either seperately or all at once.

In hgh definition, a suplement entitled Cautionary Tale: The Science of I Am Legend, which in itself is pretty scary, and 4 animated comics in high defintion, some of which are not suitable for children.

For one disc, Warner has crammed this one full but neglected any kind of commentary for the film. Popup commentary by Smith or director Frances Lawrence would have been a welcome addition.

Of the three adaptations of the novel, this one is the best, with its true science scenario and excellent performance by Smith. This is sure to be a big title for Warner and is an outstanding blu-ray release. Get it and get scared!
