"Hotel Babylon" is an over the top soap opera-like drama series.

The 8 episode first season of “Hotel Babylon” revolves around life in a 5 star hotel. Told through the eyes of the hotel staff, we get a behind-the-scenes glimpse at how the employees service guests, engage in odd activities or sexual adventures, and even grant absurd requests to high-profile guests.

To call “Hotel Babylon” trashy would be an understatement. The show is nothing more than a fast-paced, over the top, brainless fantasy series. As one would expect, there’s the usual steamy, argumentative filled relationships/interactions amongst the co-workers, plus plenty of scandalous, flat-out crazy and highly illegal acts that the employees happily do such as letting a rat in the hotel room, bringing in prostitutes for guests, and even letting a goat be sacrificed in a room. Granted, this show is clearly not for everyone (myself included), but anyone who enjoys wickedly ridiculous soap opera esque shows will eat this up.

The show does have a few shining moments such as the acting by Dexter Fletcher (Tony) as the concierge and the gorgeous Natalie Jackson Mendoza as Jackie the hotel inspector. They both do their best to keep the show watchable even throughout all the eye-rolling moments.

Extras:

Disc 1:

* “Hustle” and BBC America ads.

* Episode 1 commentary with Chris Aird and Alrick Riley- A dull commentary in which the two chat about creating the show, the sets, acting, and the characters.

Disc 2:

* Ads for “Shakespeare Retold” series.

Disc 3:

* “MI-5” ad.

* “Making Of Hotel Babylon”- A 49 minute series of making of featurettes on the costumes, directors, F/X, the creation of the show, cast and characters, guest stars, and sets.

Pioneers of Television

Category: Quick Reviews
This four part history of early television from PBS is filled with wonderful, early clips of some amazing television shows from the fifties and early 60's. Divided into four parts over two discs, the areas included were Variety Shows, Late Night, Situation Comedy and Game Shows. Among the shows covered are Red Skelton, Carol Burnett, Ed Sullivan, Jack Parr, Steve Allen, Johnny Carson, Jackie Gleason, Dick Van Dyke, Lucy, and Andy Griffith. Modern interviews with celebrities include Tim Conway, Regis Philbin, Carl Reiner, and Dick Van Dyke. The shows leave you wanting more of early television and will probably send you on a dvd set buying spree for more of this great entertainment.
