Review

"Rocket Science" is a laugh-free coming-of-age comedy.

The story: A stuttering high school student named Hal is recruited by a girl named Ginny to join the debate team. At first Hal is resistant, but he joins because he has developed a crush on Ginny. Can Hal succeed on the debate team? Will Ginny fall for Hal?

Considering “Rocket Science” director Jeffrey Blitz is best known for his acclaimed spelling bee documentary “Spellbound,” it’s rather odd that his first fictional narrative feature film is so utterly devoid of anything remotely resembling reality. Essentially, “Rocket Science” is an overlong, quirky, wannabe Wes Anderson high school movie that is loaded with mean spirited jokes about stuttering, debates, a forced romance story, a weird child who tries on a bra, characters stealing and throwing objects, and obnoxious and unrealistic fast-talking.

The most puzzling aspect of the movie is that it’s billed as a comedy, yet there’s a serious lack of humor here. Maybe I’m alone in thinking this, but the only part of the film that managed to make me crack a smile was seeing Judd Apatow veteran Jonah Hill of “Knocked Up” and “Superbad” fame.

Conclusion: Skip this one and see a FUNNY high school comedy like “Juno” instead.

Extras:

* A music video for Clem Snide’s “I Love The Unknown.”

* “The Making Of Rocket Science” (12:37)- A standard brief making of featurette with interviews and descriptions of the plot and characters.

* Trailers for “Starter For 10,” “Mr. Woodcock,” and “Martian Child.”

Astro Boy Discs- 2 And 3 Of Ultra Collector's Edition

Category: Quick Reviews
The premise of the B&W 1963 animated cartoon: A scientist named Dr. Boyton loses his son and decides to replace him by building a robot son. Shortly after, the robot boy is discarded but is soon saved by a generous man named Dr. Elefun who helps Astro Boy realize his potential to use his powers to help fight evil and save lives. One of the reasons "Astro Boy" has continued to find an audience to this day is that it isn't the same old cartoon. Each episode has a completely different storyline. Throughout episodes 11-20, we see Astro Boy encountering thugs, robots, an artificial sun, a time traveler, and even dinosaurs. Granted, the dialogue and stories can be corny, but the intense action and multi-layered characters more than make up for the flaws. Afterall, it's not everyday that one can see a selfless more human than human robot fighting in a tornado. The 4:3 fullscreen picture quality looks fairly good for a 60's cartoon, but there was a noticeable amount of dirt. The Dolby Digital Stereo track is uneven. I noticed a good deal of fuzz and poor voice recordings, but I never had a hard time of hearing the sound f/x or dialogue. Note: Fans may want to check out the 1982 and 2004 animated series as well. Also, be on the lookout for the 2009 CGI "Astro Boy" animated feature by the company who worked on the wonderful "TMNT."
