Featured Review
"Casino" is the only time in his career director Martin Scorsese really looks like he's content to repeat himself. Both narratively & stylistically, the movie is so similar to "Goodfellas" (albeit on a much bigger scale), that it could be considered a de facto sequel. Hell, there's even ample argument that it's a remake. That's not really a criticism, especially since I've always preferred Scorsese's more visceral, violent pictures than his director-for-hire work ("Cape Fear") or period pieces ("Kundun", "Age of Innocence"). At the same time, for a director who's made a career out of challenging himself, "Casino" is his first film where it feels like he's pandering to the audience. Even so, Scorsese on auto-pilot is still better than most directors' crowning achievements, and this 10th Anniversary disc from Universal is certain to please fans of the film, which has enjoyed greater success on home video than it did in its theatrical release.
