Hot Rod

Hot Rod takes on more than just an Evel Knievel-sized jump. This fairly low-brow comedy takes cues from almost every cheesey, yet loveable 80's film I can remember watching as a kid. From the soundtrack to the editing, to the montages, to the "punch-dance" Footloose sequence in the Forest on Endor, Hot Rod is derivative, yet fresh. Andy Samberg holds the movie of misfits together with his affability and no-holds-barred comedy style. It is mentioned in the Making of- documentary that the script was originally meant for Will Ferrell, and they had to "Andy Samberg-it-up." I am not sure what they mean, but I can see a lot of the Will Ferrell-esque man-child qualities in Hot Rod. Hot Rod will not win any awards any time soon, but it is a funny new entry into the "ackward-misfit-gets-the-girl-afterall" comedy genre.
