I know there's been a lot of debate about when would be the right time for a film to depict the horrific events of 9/11, about when America would be ready to relive that day. The problem is, at least for those of us who remember waking up that morning to see the Twin Towers burning on every TV station in the country, there will never be a "right" time. It doesn't matter if 5, 10 or 20 years pass by. There shouldn't be a right time, so now is as good a time as any. There's simply no sugar-coating, dramatizing or glamorizing a tragic event like this to make it easier for the public to swallow, and the makers of "United 93" know this. In depicting the heroism of 40 passengers on that doomed flight in quasi-documentary fashion, writer/director Paul Greengrass manages to pull off a seemingly impossible task...foregoing any real characterization and allowing the events themselves create all of the drama, which ultimately hits the viewer like a ton of bricks. As a film, "United 93" is as emotionally draining as any movie since "Schindler's List." It isn't entertaining at all, but it's constantly riveting, the kind of movie that sticks with you long after it's over.
