Toolbox Murders (2004)

Director Tobe Hooper's return to "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" territory falls way short of equalling that low-budget masterpiece, though it's better than the title would suggest. A semi-remake of a sleazoid 1978 flick (which, ironically, was inspired by Hooper's "Chainsaw Massacre"), the plot sees tenants of a crumbling L.A. apartment building being picked-off by a disfigured monster, using a variety of home improvement products. The story doesn't really follow the plot of the original (which is a good thing), adding some supernatural elements. Ultra-violent & gory, it's resonably well made, sometimes even suspenseful, but marred by needlessly stupid characters and an opening half-hour that's pretty slow. From Lions Gate.
