Eagle to release the making of "The Doors" April 22

Eagle Rock Entertainment announces the April 22 release of The Doors, as the next installment of its “Classic Albums” DVD series. In the midst of all this, one of the greatest rock’n’roll debut albums ever, came out of Los Angeles. Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robby Kreiger and John Densmore forever changed the way music was not only made but ingested. The Doors’ self-titled debut changed the rules of rock forever. The Doors, retail price $14.98, length 90 minutes, features its three surviving members newly interviewed about that heady rush, that intoxicating thrill, accompanying the creation of a masterpiece. Original engineer Bruce Botnick adds his own remembrances. Testimonials from such Doors-influenced musicians as Henry Rollins and Perry Farrell are juxtaposed with actual instrumental demonstrations of the songs themselves to create an incredible behind-the-scenes look that rock fans will never forget. Krieger fascinatingly demonstrates on slide and flamenco guitar just how certain songs were written. Manzarek recreates exclusively for this DVD how he chanced upon rock’s greatest organ solo (“Light My Fire”). Densmore shows off his highly idiosyncratic drum techniques. And even longtime Doors fans might not know that “Moonlight Drive” was deleted from the debut, only to show up on the next album, Strange Days, in a totally different arrangement. The Classic Album series from Eagle Rock Entertainment takes a comprehensive look into the making of landmark albums that were integral in music history. Along with interspersed live footage, the DVDs feature in-depth interviews with band members, musical peers, relevant fixtures in the music scene and those who were simply a part of the party. Producers also elaborate on and break down studio tracks at the mixing board, further explaining the recording process. Every Classic Album DVD not only tells the story; it binds the pages, paints the picture and ultimately provides the soundtrack to the making of a seminal album.

The recent death of comedian George Carlin came to mind as I sat down to write this review. Carlin and Curb Your Enthusiasm would not be the cultural icons they are without the largesse of Home Box Office. Carlin did something like 11 standup specials for them and Curb finished its 6th (and possibly final season) last year. Both reveled in foul mouthed, button pushing, boundary shattering comedy that has inspired and blown the minds of millions of viewers (from my generation at least, the ones that didn't grow up with Carlin's comedy LPs).
