We review a lot of dvds and once in a while we come across some excellent movies that have disappointed us not for their content, but for the way they were mastered. Studios are double dipping titles constantly with Special Editions with remastered picture and sound. Here is our list of all time favorites that we feel deserve a much better presentation on dvd. The list is in no significant order.
- Outland-A Sean Connery sci-fi "High Noon" in outerspace-an early dvd release by Warner that begs for better picture and sound.
- Exodus-A 3 hour Otto Preminger epic with an all-star cast including Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint,George Maharis, and Lee J Cobb. MGM squeezed this down onto one disc, so much so that sky shots are swimming with artifacts.
- The Rocketeer from Disney-this early release was a great action flick starring Jennifer Connelly and Timothy Dalton. Aspect ratio and general picture quality isjust not up to Disney 's high standards.
- Mr. Holland's Opus-A sentimental favorite suffering from the same early dvd problems as Rocketeer. Shot at Grant High School in Portland and starring Richard Dreyfuss as Holland as a long suffering music high school teacher.
- Annie Hall and other Woody Allen films-While Mr. Allen has made some great films, he does little to enhance his dvds with any extras-Come on, Woody, join the 21st century.
- Apocalypse Now-A number of different editions exist but none with the original aspect ratio.
- Sorcerer - William Friedkin's underrated, and visually stunning, remake of "The Wages of Fear" is currently only available in a fullscreen direct transfer with crummy audio.
- Moby Dick-Gregory Peck as Ahab in a John Huston film is only available in fullscreen from MGM.
- The Road Warrior-only available as a bare bonesdisc with a lousy master.
- Papillon-Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen-wasn't being on that prison island bad enough.
We are happy to report that progress is being made: How The West Was Won, which would have made our list for sure, is being remastered and will be available on August 26th on dvd and Blu-Ray. If you have a suggestion for this list, please write to

Featured Review
In countries around the world (especially in the U.S. and Japan), giant robots have been a tremendously popular and profitable source of entertainment. Whether it be "Ultraman," "Transformers," or "Gundam Wing," the robo-craze shows no sign of slowing down. Of course, with every hit film or show there comes an inferior imitator. Example: Iron King, which is clearly a wannabe "Ultraman."
Movie Quotes
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die. Rutger Hauer Blade Runner
