Review

“10,000 B.C.” is a crime against cinema.

The main story revolves around a young warrior named D’leh who goes on a brave quest to save his love (Evolet). Along the way, he begins to realize that he isn’t on a mere rescue mission, but rather a prophetic journey to free slaves as well. In other words, “10,000 B.C.” is a typical heroic tale of a seemingly ordinary man who becomes the “chosen one” so to speak.

 

“10,000 B.C.” is a disaster of epic proportions.  I honestly can’t think of anything positive to say about the film other than it has nice production values. The list of flaws is nearly endless. The Mammoth, killer Ostrich, and Saber-toothed Tiger F/X are about as convincing as those on a Sci-Fi channel original, the acting by the no-name cast is on par with dinner theatre shows, the blue screen work is some of the most laughable I have seen in ages, the narration is corny, the dialogue is cheap, and to top it off nothing is historically accurate in the least (unless you believe Mammoths helped build pyramids).

 

I could also go on about the ridiculous character names (like Tic’Tic, Moha, and Old Mother) or how the “Stargate” like villain is completely out of place, but I honestly don’t want to waste any more words on this tripe. My advice is to stay as far away from this film as humanely possible.

Picture and Sound

The widescreen picture certainly looks above average for a DVD release, but the colors were far too bright at times and I also noticed a few scenes looked rather fuzzy in parts.

The Dolby Surround 5.1 audio track is a mixed blessing. The track contains loud, rousing action scenes, but the quiet dialogue driven scenes sounded a bit too low.

Extras

The only extras are Warner trailers, a 3 minute alternate ending and 10 ½ minutes of additional scenes.

No one could ever call Stephen Chow a subtle director. Over the course of his lengthy career as a writer-director-star of a series of increasingly over the top martial arts action/comedy hybrids, Chow fills the screen with loud braying, outlandish fight scenes and hyperkinetic action that defies every law of physics. That may sum up a lot of modern Hong Kong action films, but Chow infuses them with Three Stooges-like slapstick and bits of Westernized melodrama that often run at odds with the sequences that proceeded it.
