What would you do for money? Would you kill a fly? Make a child cry? Would you kill someone? Director Chukiat Sakveerakul's darkly comedic Thai thriller, 13 : Game of Death, follows one man's game from innocent beginning to utter moral reprehensibility.

Krissada Sukosol Clapp portrays Chit, an average man who has just lost his job and is in need of money to support himself and his mother. On the day he gets fired, he receives a call in a stairwell making him an offer. If he can kill the fly buzzing around him, he will win $100. Upon doing so, he learns that he has just completed the first of thirteen tasks that could lead to a $100 million fortune. All he has to do is successfully complete all of the tasks, and the money is his. However, if he decides to stop the game, he will lose any money he has earned.

The game begins innocently enough with the fly, but things sink more and more into morally reprehensible actions. Chit's decisions left me uttering, "I would never do that! Wait...would I?" more than once. The film does a brilliant job of addressing humanity's obsession with money, and plays out like a deranged version of the game show Moment of Truth, with plenty of Evil Dead humor thrown in.

One of the things I loved so much about this film, aside from its poignant message about greed, is its humor. Too often, I find horror/thriller humor to be groan-inducing, but this film is full of genuinely amusing moments. In one unforgettable scene, Chit is making his way up the wall of a well. When he drops the cell phone he has been receiving his tasks through, the results are so hilarious that I had to watch the whole scene again. It was even funnier.

It should be noted that, although 13 : Game of Death is being called a horror film, it is more a thriller. The only monsters you will find here are the beasts of human selfishness and greed. There are certainly gruesome acts and thrills, but a label of psychological thriller would be more fitting.

This film was so much more than I expected, and it reaffirmed my love of the genre. When horror/thriller is best, it is when it contains a relatable message, clever humor, and icky-ooky bits that never feel pointless. Through all the humor (which, I must say, does an excellent job paying tribute to the genre as a whole), there is a relevant topic addressed that makes us question our own morals.

If you're in the mood for a more light-hearted (yet still absolutely revolting) bit of blood-splattered goodness, check 13 : Game of Death out. It's not scary, but it's definitely twisted, refreshingly original, and makes the viewer wonder - how far would I go?

Boston Strangler

Category: DVD Reviews
Until I received this screener disc, I had never seen The Boston Strangler , though I had always meant to, probably because of my interest in true crime stories (serial killers in particular). Its just one of those movies that you never really think about until someone else mentions it, mainly because it isn't really regarded as a classic (though it was a box office success). As such, while I figured it would be at least interesting, my expectations were fairly low. After viewing it, the first thing I thought was it's a shame the film seems to be one of the forgotten relics of the 60s, because this is a pretty damned good (and intense) movie, even for those raised on such similar modern fare as Seven . This catalogue release from Fox is a definite keeper, and includes some good extras.
