Review

Jack Bauer, counter terrorist expert starts his second "day" of this original and exciting action series by dealing with the aftermath of his first. While he holds up in a small apartment and tries to see his daughter (Elisha Cuthbert), he is recruited back to work for CTU by now President Palmer to stop terrorists from exploding an atomic bomb in LA. Fox passed me up on a screener for Season One but I now plan to buy it to catch up on the series-it's that good.
This unique real time series deals with how Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) and other characters introduced in the series deal with the day's events in real time. There are some new characters and some returning such as Dennis Haysbert as President Palmer and Penny Johnson as the mysterious ex-Mrs. Palmer. Is she working for the President or against him? It's still not clear by the end of Season 2-expect her to return in Season 3. Also returning is Elisha Cuthbert as Jack's daughter, who stumbles from one bad situation to another on this day; which is a bit hard to swallow at times. While Cuthbert shows acting talent, I would have liked to see her more caught up in her Dad's situation, rather then the troubled subplot the writers put her into this season. The action in this show is at breakneck speed throughout the series and totally gripping-it truly is an addicting show and the DVD set will have you hooked for days if you have not seen it on Fox TV channel. Each hour ends with a cliff hanger in the best tradition, and you find yourself starting up the next hour. Jack's character, bitter from the events of the first season, is far less passionate then before and is much more dark in his methods and tactics. Jack's body count is way up on this day. The series writers should be commended on how they connect characters introduced in the early episodes until they slowly come together as the series builds up to an exciting finale. It's also designed to get you hooked for next season.

Picture and Sound

Widescreen television sets will benefit from this series as it is shot in 1:78 anamorphic widescreen. The discs also contain a 5.1 Dolby digital soundtrack. Technically, the discs, which are four hours per side, have very few artifacts and a beautiful picture. Sound imaging is also first rate with discreet channel imaging throughout the 24 one hour episodes. Home theater owners will love the three and four section montages included at the end of each episode, which build up to the cliffhanger.

Extras

A seventh disc in this set includes more footage (40 deleted or extended scenes), commentary on some episodes by cast and crew, a two part making of documentary, production specials, and teasers for Season Three. After watching the entire set for 24 hours, this bonus is disc is more than adequate for series fans.

Summary

One of the most dynamic television series being produced today, "24" is a remarkable achievement for television entertainment. It runs more like a twenty four hour movie and is certainly as exciting as half the action films in theaters. While it has some weaknesses that are characteristic of television plots( how does Jack Bauer get that great cell phone reception all the time?) , it is suspenseful and will hold you on the edge of your seat through most episodes. A real bargain that streets for around $50.00, this set is well worth the money for the amount of solid entertainment you will get. Now I got to go buy Season One.
