Review

Set in the world that John Hughes created back in the 80's, “27 Dresses” is the story of Jane, always the bride maid and never the bride. No seriously, always the bridesmaid, in the tune of 27 times, and now it is her turn.

If you are looking for a new take on the romantic comedy, this really is not it. However, like Hughes did with his comedies of the 80's, director Anne Fletcher turns this pop candy movie into a story filled with fun, witty, somewhat real characters.

Since there is not much of a real plot I will leave out most of the details and just give you basic set up. Jane played with easy charm and great comedic timing by Katherine Heigl, loves weddings, other people weddings she has be brides maid for 27 friends. She longs for a wedding of her own hopefully with George (Ed Burns), her boss, who she shyly tries to woo with little success. Jane's sister, Tess (The Heartbreak Kids' Melora Hardin) returns from modeling in Europe and easily steal the heart of George, which soon leads to a wedding in which Jane will again be a bridesmaid. In comes a cynical wedding reporter (James Mardsen) to report on said wedding and also be the “other guy” for this romantic comedy.

“27 Dresses” is a great light movie where the laughs out number the cringe worthy scenes. There are few scenes that stand out, the best being the montage of ugly, I mean ugly bridesmaid dresses that Jane has accumulated over the years and also an over the top scene set in a bar with everyone singing Elton John's "Benny and Jets”.

It should be noted that Katherine Heigl is becoming the next Sandra Bullock, combing her comedy timing with a girl next door charm and looks. She is blazing a unique path for herself and is an welcome addition to the number of amazing female comedians working today.

Overall, I enjoyed this movie and see how this could easily find a home in numerous people's DVD collections and brought out every couple of years for a nice sweet movie on a Sunday night. It is a perfect date movie and not bad for those bridesmaids who are dreaming of their own weddings.

Longest Day, The

Category: DVD Reviews
The Longest Day was a dream come true for Darryl F. Zanuck. After he had left the major studios, this was his most challenging project ever. Taken from a novel by WWII novelist Cornelius Ryan, the cast includes thousands-literally, as Zanuck went about re-creating the D-Day invasion of Europe. No small task and it took years to put together. Up until "Saving Private Ryan", this was the ultimate D-Day film, made with care and respect by one of Hollywood's greatest achievers.
