Review

Here's yet another pseudo-hip, self-consciously quirky crime drama, complete with colorful characters, a retro-cool music score and numerous (failed) attempts at black comedy. Its plot reminded me a lot of that 1972 comedy-of-errors classic, "What Up, Doc?", only without the laughs. While it's far from the most original or entertaining film in the world, "29 Palms" manages to hold the viewer's interest in spite of its numerous flaws.

Picture and Sound

The picture, presented in 1.77:1 widescreen, is a bit of a disappointment. While there is little grain, there are numerous scratches present, as well as a constant murkiness in the overall picture. A shame, since it's obvious Ricagni intended to make the most out of his picturesque desert locations. The soundtrack isn't too impressive, either. The dialogue is often difficult to hear, even at key moments, no matter which channel you choose to view the film.

Extras

Considering Artisan is often pretty frugal with the extras for their minor releases, there's quite a bit here. Most of it is simply text, but it does offer some interesting information. There's also an audio commentary by the movie's producers; it isn't bad, but I've always preferred commentaries by people more personally involved in the creative process, such as the director, screenwriter or principle actors (I guess it's just a matter of personal taste). In addition to those features, the original trailer is included.

Summary

"29 Palms" is obviously inspired by numerous other (and better) movies proceeding it, including the recent spate of ultra-cool English crime thrillers which have popped up lately. However, it's seldom ever boring (with the notable exception of the flashbacks). It's no classic, but it still manages to be a fairly entertaining way to kill 93 minutes.
