Review

There is no better way to spend the holiday than to watch this beautiful adaptation of Scrooge, with Alistair Sim in the lead role. This DVD, brought to us by VCI Entertainment and The Roan Group was produced from the original black and white 35 mm negative. It is a holiday treasure.
Alistair Sim brings life into the Scrooge character and for many, he is the one and only Scrooge. The original title of the film was "Scrooge", as you can tell from the on screen credits. His portrayal of the cold hearted miser, who is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve, is well known so I won't go into too many details. Michael Hordern, playing his ghostly partner howls and haunts Scrooge with relish. Sim is joined by Hermione Baddely, Jack Warner, Kathleen Harrison and a very young Patrick Macnee (John Steed). The direction and production brings Dicken's novel to life and is a perfect portrait of Dicken's England.

Picture and Sound

Picture-The fullscreen transfer is pristine and in great shape for a film of its age. Black and white contrast is rich and detailed. The film is sharp in focus and only a few minor flaws are noticeable. DVD makes this one even better. Sound-The Dolby digital cleans up the sound nicely, and very little hiss was detected. The staunch English accents are well understood. Because the print is in such good shape, very few other sound defects were noticed.

Extras

The film is introduced by Patrick Macnee in a Christmas atmosphere, which is colorful and festive with lights and a tree in the background. Macnee introduces the film with affection as a family favorite of his. Also included on the DVD are biographies of the cast, production notes, and a classic cartoon from Max Fleischer, "Rudolph , The Red Nose Reindeer", which includes the song of the ever popular holiday critter. This Technicolor cartoon shows its age and is not in as good of shape as the 1951 film. Chief culprit are dark vertical lines throughout the cartoon. Still, the colors are bright and cheery and the animated feature is entirely watchable. It's a nice addition to an already good disc.

Summary

The best film adaptation of Charles Dickens's classic is brought to DVD with an excellent transfer and nice bonuses. A great family treat to enjoy for years to come.

An Inconvenient Truth

Category: DVD Reviews
Trying to review "An Inconvenient Truth" strictly on its merits as a film is tough. If you believe Al Gore's dire message about global warming, it's the scariest documentary ever made. If you think he's full of shit, you'll hate this movie, becoming either increasingly insulted, angry or amused. Maybe that's the best praise you can give it...whatever your stance, "An Inconvenient Truth" is never boring.
