Review
This compilation of classic cartoons features the work of the Fleischer Brothers and their truly three dimensional processes, films from Famous Studios, early Warner Brothers Tweety and Sylvester, and even an award winning Russian cartoon. The cartoons depict Christmas scenes of traditions that have all but vanished but come back to life in these animated wonders.
The DVD includes 11 cartoons, varying in length from 7 minutes to 11 minutes. The cartoons on this disc include: Jack Frost-From Famous Studios-1934 Shanty Where Santa Claus Lives-1933-(Black and White) Somewhere In Dreamland-1936-Fleischer Studios color Christmas Comes But Once A Year-1936 Christmas Night-1938 Rudolph, The Red Nose Reindeer-1941 Hector's Hectic Life-1948 Snow Foolin'-1949-Sing Along of Jingle Bells included Gift Wrapped-1952-Tweety and Sylvester in an early Warner Brothers classic Santa's Surprise-1957 Nobozodhee (Russian) 1959 Many of these cartoons have the classic cartoon cupie doll looking kids that enjoy the holiday in various ways. Some depict poverty and children with little or nothing for Christmas, a reminder of the harsh life of the thirties and the Depression.

Picture and Sound
Picture-Quality varies on the DVD as each cartoon has experienced the ravages of time. The one that suffers the most, unfortunately is the Fleischer selection, "Dreamland", which suffers from soft focus and varying contrast. Through tweaking of your television, the sharpness does come up a bit. "Gift Wrapped", the Warner selection, also has a film skip in it from negative damage. Color saturation also varies from cartoon to cartoon. The second animation, "Shanty", is a lively musical cartoon that was filmed in black and white, but has had a reddish tone tinting applied to it, much like some silent movies added tinting to convey atmosphere before color. "Snow Foolin'" is a great trip back to theater sing-a-longs, as we follow the bouncing ball (egg) to the lyrics of Jingle Bells. I never knew there were so many verses! Sound-Dolby digital to the rescue again and it cleans up the sound on these old gems well, removing hiss and pops. A nice clean soundtrack.
Extras
The DVD includes chapter stops to the individual cartoons or an option to play the entire DVD in one sitting. If you chose to view individual cartoons, the dic will play through from the point you start.
Summary
While varying greatly in quality, this DVD is a must for animation lovers. I really wish someone would invest in restoring the old Fleischer toons, as these were so remarkable in filming technique. Kids are sure to enjoy the tunes, and I think the sing-a-along cartoon is wonderful for the holiday. Priced reasonably, this DVD contains some memory filled classics, if you can put up with the poor video quality of some of the selections.
