Review

This second volume in the Young Indy series stars Sean Patrick Flannery as Jones as he experiences the First World War. The package from Paramount is another huge set of nine discs with 8 television movies (reedited by Lucas) and a slew of documentaries about people and events that transpire during his adventures. The series also has some stars in guest star roles, including Victor Spinelli (A Hard Days Night, HELP!), Catherine Zeta Jones and Daniel Craig (Casino Royale) among others. There is no "old" Indy in these films that were featured when the series aired on network television and on VHS tapes.
The nine discs in the set contain and television film reedited by Lucas and special feature documentaries. It is better organized then the last set sticking the movie and documentaries together on one disc, instead of the sprawling mess that was in the first set. Indy's adventures involve all kinds of World War I experiences, from trench warfare in the early episodes to spying for Belgium and France later on. Famous people that Indy meets are a big part of the series and in this west he escapes from prison with Charles DeGaulle, sleeps with Mata Hari, flies against the Red Baron, hears Lenin speak during the Russian Revolution, commits himself to stopping the war when he meets Albert Schweitzer in Africa, and meets old friends Pablo Picasso and TE Lawrence among others. The scripts for the films vary depending on the subject but include much more action and stunts then the first set. Young Indy develops his skills by riding, flying and running throughout the shows; some of the stunts are very well coordinated and spectacular for a television show.

Picture and Sound

I found the picture to be unremarkable at times; not up to usual Lucas ILM standards. Some shots were soft in focus (battle scenes) and the overall quality seemed to lack the usual high production values of a Lucas production. The series was shot all over the world and this set seemed not to feature as many of the spectacular vistas and places visited in the first set. Also, a parental cautionary note: some of the war scenes are extremely grisly in detail (ie-dead bodies in the mud with rats crawling around them). Of course, war is hell and adults will not find the scenes too graphic but younger children might. Sound is two channel Dolby and while it is adequate it is also less than spectacular for a surround sound system.

Extras

Each disc has intelligent documentaries with rare footage of subjects and historical events. They are all well written and produced but seem too mature for younger audiences. I can see these documentaries being used at the high school level and above only but there is a lot of knowledge for history buffs that will keeps them viewing for weeks. The ninth disc contains no movie but an interactive historical timeline and history lecture entitles "War and Revolution" plus a Special Delivery game. The nine discs come in the same foldout booklet with overlapping discs which flawed the first set. Also, once again, there is no paper booklet of information to reference on disc contents.

Summary

This second set of the Young Indy series delivers a great deal of action-adventure featuring its young star but disappoints in picture quality. It is also much more expensive than the first set and continues to suffer from the same lousy disc on disc booklet design as the first set. Subject matter is still fascinating, the documentaries are excellent and most history buffs will still want this set regardless of its flaws.
