Review

AFFINITY, based on Sarah Waters’ romantic novel, is a story about passion, betrayal and the mysteries of the human heart and spirit in 19th Century England.  After her father dies, Margaret Prior (Anna Madeley, BRIDESHEAD REVISITED) escapes from the rigors of society’s expectations by becoming a “Lady Visitor” to Millbank Prison, providing the female inmates with support and inspiration.  One prisoner in particular strikes Margaret’s fancy, Selina Dawes (Zoe Tapper, MRS. PALFREY AT THE CLAREMONT), a spiritual medium behind bars for a séance that ended in a fatal tragedy.  At first, Margaret is skeptical of Selina’s powers, but soon she finds herself drawn into the allure of the Victorian era’s mystical spiritualism where nothing is quite what it seems.


Screenwriter Andrew Davies, who has an AFFINITY of his own of adapting novels into screenplays, presents a taut and compelling romantic mystery.  AFFINITY may be period, but plays modern, lending it an easy accessibility not normally enjoyed by costume dramas.
