James Herriot's, the veterinarian turned storyteller, has is first book adapted to the screen in this 1975 English film starring Simon Ward and Anthony Hopkins. Another star in this film is the Yorkshire countryside, which is simply beautiful.
Young James Herriot arrives in Yorkshire fresh from London and is quickly thrown into the village life and its citizens, with all their animals. The villagers naturally are a bit standoffish at this young assistant to the village vet, played by Anthony Hopkins, who is eccentric and demanding. As his skills slowly win people over, James becomes more comfortable with its citizens as well. He meets a young farm girl, played by Lisa Harrow, and is soon romancing her. This film is a refreshing change from fast moving action movies. No great crisis occur but instead we get a glimpse of the charming life this vet encounters in his life in Yorkshire. It is a family film, one for the entire family, although some wee ones may have trouble with all the English slang. There are sad occasions, as when an old man must make the decision to put his old dog to sleep, and also triumphs, as Herriot wins over the respect of the village horsebreeder with his prize animal.

Picture and Sound

Anchor Bay has done a great job on this 1975 film. Although full frame, the picture information is excellent and clean. Colors are bright and focus is sharp. Saturation is bit washed but can be adjusted. With the exception of a couple short scenes, where the sound is a bit muddied, the Dolby surround is well placed and dialog is clear. I did have to crank it up a bit as the sound levels are adjusted low. This is a quiet film, and involves a lot of dialog. With their English accents, cranking it up a few notches helps.

Extras

An original trailer is all that is offered. I'd really like Anchor Bay to work on the extras, as this film deserves at least some subtitles and captioning.

Summary

This quiet, charming film has some great acting and tells a great human story about caring; for people and animals. Simon Ward and Anthony Hopkins deliver fine performances, as do Lisa Harrow and Brian Stirner as Hopkins' son. It is a great, mellow film for the entire family.

Tommy Boy - Holy Schnike Edition

Category: DVD Reviews
I always thought watching Chris Farley do his schtick was kind of depressing, even before his death. Here was a guy throwing around his considerable girth, roaring like he had the world's worst constipation, all in an attempt to get us to laugh at how endearingly stupid he was. He always looked like was killing himself to amuse his audience, and could drop dead of a heart attack any second. The sad part is most of the time, I think people were laughing AT him, not with him. His "Tommy Boy" co-star, David Spade, is just the opposite, a one-note comic whose stock-in-trade is the kind of smarmy sarcasm that would get you beaten up in a bar if you attempted it yourself. Both actors were marginally tolerable on "Saturday Night Live," when limited range of talents were offered in much smaller doses. Being subject to their routines for 97 minutes is downright deadly, especially when the material is about as funny watching a bad comic fail miserably on open-mike night. Needless to say, I hated "Tommy Boy," which panders to the average 12-year-old mentality and makes Adam Sandler's idiotic excursions look like comedy classics. But, hell, SOMEONE must think they're funny...why else would Paramount feel we need a 2-disc special edition of the movie? If you ARE one of those folks (and I wouldn't boast too loudly about that), you'll find a lot to enjoy with this set, which admittedly includes a ton of useful extras.
