Review

Terry Dean (Paul Hogan, CROCODILE DUNDEE) is a thief and electronics whiz just released after 5 years in prison. In between stints trying his hand at armed bank robbery (as opposed to the breaking and entering crimes that had been his specialty), Terry saves a kid from being struck by a car and winds up in the hospital. While unconscious, Terry believes he is visited by God, who looks an awful lot like Charlton Heston. God sends Terry back as an angel “on probation” and with orders that he is to do more giving and less taking while helping the needy.


Hardly believing it can be true at first, Terry is soon following the signs from God he finds in the world around him. He ends up in a small town bar (called Paradise; the bar, not the town), picking a fight with Steve Garner, a “jerk in a wheelchair” (Elias Koteas, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES). Steve and his sister Rose (Linda Kozlowski, Mrs. CROCODILE DUNDEE) run a recreation center for latch-key kids, and Terry puts his “skills” to use helping the siblings convince a reluctant donor to make good on his contribution. Through his good works, Terry firmly believes he can become more than ALMOST AN ANGEL.

Paul Hogan adapts his Crocodile Dundee personality to that of a street-wise thief. While he doesn’t have much range as an actor, he has an ease of humor that carries him with a fair amount of grace through each of his projects. ALMOST AN ANGEL is no exception. Hogan fans will appreciate finally having this title on DVD, so that they can complete their collections. Keep an eye out for brief appearances by Larry Miller (PRETTY WOMAN) and David Alan Grier (IN LIVING COLOR).
