Review

As far as documentaries go, this is one of the coolest I've seen in awhile. High production values, complex interviews and compelling subject matter turn this series into something special. Black crime is explored from a black perspective, and we see that there are always multiple sides to every story.

Just like many people out there, there's been a great big hole in my soul since The Wire finished up. Many tears later, DVD Dave dropped this series in my lap. I've enjoyed plenty a documentary in my time, but I generally don't go searching them out. They aren't my genre of choice, if you will. But whoa doctor, did this knock me for a loop.

American Gangster is about famous African-American crime cases spanning the later half of the twentieth century. We learn about kingpins, bangers, terrorists, and serial killers. The interviews are fabulous, covering everyone from retired ganglords to close relations of violent madmen to academics. The show goes out of its way to present as many different sides to the story as possible. Men used guns to build an economy for their family and friends in a society that saw them as gabage on the sidewalks. Neglect and abuse turn innocent children into monsters. In American Gangster, there are no easy answers.

I can't stress enough how well crafted this show is. Archival footage and photos are blended seamlessly with re-creations and stock footage. Quick and kinetic graphics keep you on the edge of your seat. Music is used appropriately. Some might find the show a little over produced, but being someone who isn't naturally inclined towards documentaries, I liked the style.

Check out this show. You'll have a great time and you'll learn a lot about a part of American history not discussed in the classrooms.

Picture and Sound

The craftsmanship on this series is fantastic. Picture and sound are crisp and beautiful. Quick editing and dynamic graphics make for a fast paced interesting visual experience.

Extras

There aren't really any extras to speak of. Melvin Williams, Frank Lucas and Bo Baines have extra interview footage that was cut in the initial episodes. A wonderful little mini-documentary shows Frank Lucas' now grown-up son hanging out with his hilarious entourage and giving a compelling viewpoint to his father's story. With this sort of DVD, you don't really need any special features. Commentary and making of featurettes would be boring.

Summary

American Gangster Season 2 presents ten famous cases concerning Africa-American crime in a fun, flashy and fascinating fashion.

Road To El Dorado, The

Category: DVD Reviews
Just in time for the holidays, Dreamworks releases another animation masterpiece, with state of the art techniques and colorful characterizations. This animated feast for the eyes stars the voices of Kevin Kline and Kenneth Brannaugh as two lovable rogues, accompanied by a streetwise native girl (Rosie Perez) and also features the talents of James Edwards Olmos and Armand Assante. It 's a very fast moving adventure comedy, with lots of laughs for adults and kids.
