Review

Jeff Bridges stars as a professor of modern American history, specializing in terrorism, along with Tim Robbins and Joan Cussack, in this modern day tale of suburbia, terrorism, and relationships. Bridges is caught up in a web of curiosity involving his neighbors, people who have lived across the street for quite a while but he has never really known. The acting in this film is intense and Bridges and Robbins put in great performances.
Bridges is introduced to his neighbors by accident, taking their boy to the hospital after he accidentally sets off some fireworks too close to his hand. His neighbors seem the all-American couple, with Robbins portraying an architect. Robbins and Cussack befriend Bridges, who is a lonely man since his FBI wife died in an FBI raid and Bridges finds their companionship welcome. Bridges starts to discover little bits of their family life that doesn't ring true and slowly, through investigation and the help of an FBI friend and his new fiancee', he begins to unravel who is neighbors really are. As he begins to find out more information, the story starts to snowball into a fast action thriller. Robbins performance is chilling in his role as the neighbor and Bridges is at his intense best as he discovers the real identity and purpose of the people across the street.

Picture and Sound

Picture- An excellent picture presented in widescreen involves the viewer with the action as it quickly takes off. The photography was at times very personal and there are many up close scenes as well as action sequences. Color balance and sharpness are a trademark of Columbia-Tristar releases and this is no exception. Sound-Dolby digital 5.1 and 2.0 are both offered but the the sound lacks other language alternatives, which is unusual for a disc these days. Even captioning is only offered in English. A bit disappointing for a modern movie disc such as this. The Dolby itself is put to good use throughout the movie and all channels are utilized well depending on the scene.

Extras

Columbia-Tristar , while not including other languages, did include other extras which make this a good value. There is commentary from the director and Jeff Bridges on an alternate track, theatrical trailers, a making of featurette, talent files and an alternate ending, all included in this reasonably priced disc.

Summary

This film is loaded with intrigue, great performances, a lot of action, and has a believable plot. It is another quality release from Columbia-Tristar.It also has a surprise ending and includes a number of extras for the price. Its only shortcoming is in alternative language options. It is certainly worth a rental and if you are Bridges or Robbins fan, a worthy addition to your collection.

Ninja Scroll

Category: DVD Reviews
Since it's release in 1993, Ninja Scroll has become one of the best-known anime movies out there. Manga was wise to choose this film as one of it's earlier DVD releases. Directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, the creator of Wicked City, Ninja Scroll combines lightning-fast action, with an engaging story line, to produce a memorable movie experience. If you like Samurai films, and are into the more serious style of Japanese animation, then Ninja Scroll is exactly your type of movie.
