Review

Martin Scorsese's latest triumph stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the eccentric billiionaire Howard Hughes. DiCaprio has his hands full to portray Hughes and does an excellent job, spanning 30 years of Hughes' life. His costars include an Academy Award winning performance by Cate Blanchett as Katherine Hepburn, Kate Beckinsdale, John C. Reilly, Alan Alda, Jude Law (as Errol FLynn)and Alec Baldwin but the film really belongs to DiCaprio.
Scorsese concentrates on Hughes from his rise as Hollywood producer and director, his passion for aviation (hence the title), and his obsessive compulsive behavior which spun out of control later on in his life. A heavy side plot involves Hughes with Hepburn and his obsession with women, including Ava Gardner(Beckinsdale). In this quick 3 hour film, Scorsese keeps us gripped to the screen with this fascinating individual who had everything but whose fears brought him down to a shell of a man afraid of just about everything.

Picture and Sound

Excellent widescreen picture and Dolby surround add to the excellent storyline and performances. Highlights include special effects of Hughes crashing his plane into Beverly Hills home in the 40's, his work on the Hercules (Spruce Goose), and his descent into madness. Rich productions show glamourous nightclub Hollywood of the 30's with a realism seldom captured on film.

Extras

The disc set contains many extras including full length commentary by Scorsese during the film and disc two contains an additional scene, many real documentaries about Hughes from the History Channel, with additional comments from DiCaprio, other cast members and crew. Featurettes cover production, historical background research into Hughes, interviews with experts about his affliction and how tragic his circumstances were; had he been around today, they would have been able to get him the help he needed. Other featurettes cover production, costuming, musical score, and glamour in Hollywood. It is topped off with a conversation with DiCaprio and Alan Alda. The second disc will keep you occupied for at least another two to three hours of viewing.

Summary

An excellent entertainment package, reasonably priced, will keep you entertained for hours. Besides an excellent film, the disc set includes an great second disc, giving you more insight into this fascinating figure of the 20th century. Another superb film from Scorsese; this one deserved the best Oscar IMHO and Scorsese as well.
