Review

If you were a fan of the Beatles, you probably also liked the only other Apple band, Badfinger. Their sound was very Beatles-like with three part harmonies and a driving pop-rock sound. They had many hit songs, including the Paul McCartney written "Come and Get It', as well as the pop love song, "Without You", recorded by Nillson and Mariah Carey. The tragedy that befell Badfinger unfortunately not only led to these talented, hard working musicians to lose their money to their manager, but also to the suicides of two members of the group.
This 1997 documentary about the band has extensive interviews with the two surviving members, Joey Molland and Tom Gibbons, as well as recording engineers and others who knew them. Through their recollections we hear the entire story of Badfinger from its beginnings as "the Iveys" to speculation about the suicides of Pete Ham and Tom Evans. It also contains early music videos and television performances which showed just how good these guys were as a tight band. This director's cut, includes additional information about Pete Ham's final days and stories about the band touring together.

Summary

Badfinger was just reaching their potential when their creativity was cut short by greedy record executives and mismanagement. If you were a fan of this group, this is a must DVD to own. It tells the whole story from the people who lived it. I just wish it would have included more complete music. You may have to search a bit for this one, as it was an early DVD release. Pioneer packaged this DVD in a regular audio jewel box with a cardboard slip cover, something they did for early DVD's before they standardized on the Amaray keep case. I am hoping for releases of more Pioneer Artists musical programs that were originally produced for laser disc. As a leader in entertainment, Pioneer should stop sitting on this library and release their finest selections from the 80's and early 90's on DVD.
