Review

Barbie's second video release is a surprisingly entertaining fairytale adventure with a well developed storyline, dramatic voice acting, and excellent production values. I tested this DVD out on the toughest audience; my six year old daughter and she enjoyed it tremendously and has watched it over 5 times since receiving it from Artisan.
Barbie plays Rapunzel, the girl with the excellent long hair who becomes imprisoned in a tower by the wicked Gothel, played by Angelica Huston. It is there that the traditional Rapunzel storyline ends and elements from other fairytales take over. While in her tower, Rapunzel does have access to her friends, a friendly baby dragon named Penelope (played by Cree Summer) and also a funny rabbit. Penelope's father is also a slave by magic to Gothel. In the tower, she also discovers a magic paintbrush, which allows her to escape from the tower and return at will. On one of her journeys outside, she meets handsome prince Stefan (Ken?), who has his own problems with feuding kingdoms between his father and a neighbor. A ball is announced and Rapunzel prepares but Gothel discovers her plans to go to the ball and dashes her hopes of being rescued. Will Rapunzel ever escape from her evil magic? This is just a sample of the story development involved in this computer generated video, with shades of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and other fairytales sprinkled in. It is brought together well and has a climactic and rousing ending.

Picture and Sound

Excellent picture quality is present on the DVD. Barbie is a doll and as a result, she doesn't look real but she and the other characters do have good, clean movement and remarkable clarity. This is not Bug's Life or Monster's Inc. and you should not expect the same amount of detail work from those two features but it is still of very high quality. The computer actors also do a fine job with emotional expression project their characters well. Dolby 5.1 sound is a real bonus on this disc, with excellent dynamic range. A good example of this is when the daddy dragon flies in to check up on Penelope and you hear the force of his wings and the weight of his body when he touches down. He is a big fellow and you know it from the sound. The soundtrack also includes a song by Samantha Mumba and music played by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Extras

The disc, modestly priced at $20.00 also comes with extras for children to enjoy. Besides both fullscreen and widescreen versions of the film, the disc comes with an art gallery, a dress up Rapunzel game, a documentary entitles "The Artist In Me", a Barbie in the Nutcracker trailer (The first Barbie video), and a DVD ROM Sampler of the CD-ROM adventure game.

Summary

An enchanting and delightful adventure starring Barbie is a wonderful surprise for its high production values and excellent picture and sound. A real value at $20.00 and perfect for that little girl you know for the holidays.

It Waits

Category: DVD Reviews
"It Waits" is one of those movies that might have been more entertaining if it was stupid and ineptly made. But, as it stands, because it is fairly well done, what we have left is an overlong, bland and sometimes boring film that seems to take forever to get going, and when it does, the payoff isn't worth the wait.
