Review

“Batman-Gotham Knight” is a disappointing animated feature.

The story: This 6 story “Animatrix” style animated feature finds Batman facing off against the likes of Killer Croc, mobsters, the Scarecrow, and Deadshot. We also see what Batman is like through the eyes of several Gotham City citizens.

As a huge fan of the 90’s “Batman” animated series, I was excited to see voice actor Kevin Conroy returning to the role of the Dark Knight. Sadly, however, “Gotham Knight” is one of the weakest animated “Batman” projects alongside “Mystery Of The Batwoman.”

You’d think that with a team of talented directors (who worked on the fantastic “Animatrix”) and writers (like David Goyer, Josh Olsen and Greg Rucka) that “Gotham Knight” would have been a treat for Batman aficionados, but alas no. This 76 minute feature is nothing more than an overly stylized marketing tie-in with an over reliance on action. Sure, the six interconnected story plot is ambitious, but they all simply lack the punch and thoughtfulness of the 90’s “Batman” animated series. In my opinion, the animated series is still far and away the best screen interpretation of not only the Batman character, but the universe he inhabits. None of the live-action films or other television series can hold a candle to it (so far).

Another problem I had with ‘Gotham’ was that the pacing of each segment seemed really off to me. They felt like rough cuts and not finished versions.

In conclusion, I recommend skipping “Gotham Knight” and renting or buying any of the animated Batman season sets or any of the “Batman Beyond” season sets instead.

Picture and Sound

The widescreen picture is definitely sharp looking, but I did notice some lines in certain scenes. Still, the various animation styles looked clean and crisp, but I’m sure it looks superior on Blu-ray.

The Dolby Surround 5.1 track is also impressive. The voice work is strong, the action rocks the speakers, and the background noises of the city sound perfect.

Extras

* Trailers for “10,000 BC,” “Appleseed Ex Machina,” “The Dark Knight,” “Popeye The Sailor,” “Lego Batman,” and “Journey To The Center Of The Earth.”
* A sneak peek at the next animated DC film “Wonder Woman.” I have to admit this looks promising. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that it has a killer cast doing voice work.
* Commentary by Kevin Conroy, Gregory Noveck, and Dennis O’Neil. A decent commentary track with some interesting chatter about the evolution of the character and the different takes on the comic character.
* The best extra features by far are four episodes of the “Batman” animated series. The episodes are: “Heart Of Ice,” “I Am The Night,” “Legends Of The Dark Knight,” and “Over The Edge.”
* “A Mirror For The Bat” is a 33 minute featurette on the various villains.
* “Batman And Me, A Devotion To Destiny: The Bob Kane Story” is a wonderful 37 minute featurette on the “Batman” creator. The highlight for me was seeing Stan Lee and Bob’s wife wife recalling a story of Bob going to the premiere of the 89’ Batman film.

Peyton Place

Category: DVD Reviews
Peyton Place is, of course, the mother of all melodramatic soap operas, setting the standard by which all similar films are judged. It also spawned a few sequels and a hit TV show. While it was pretty controversial and lurid for its time, in this age of reality TV and internet porn, it's doubtful anything in Peyton Place would raise an eyebrow today. While it may not have aged as well as other films in Fox's Studio Classics series, it's nevertheless given a pretty good DVD treatment.
