Review

In preparation of this summer's "The Dark Knight," Warner Bros. is re-packaging two near-perfect animated features ("Batman And Mr. Freeze: Subzero" and "Batman- Mask Of The Phantasm") together in one double-sided disc.
"Batman And Mr. Freeze: Subzero" sees Mr. Freeze kidnapping Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) to try and use her to bring back his dead wife. "Batman- Mask Of The Phantasm" sees the Dark Knight getting framed for murdering several mob bosses. Who is really behind the murders? Does this vigilante have something to do with Bruce Wayne's past? Is there more to this mystery than we think?

As a Batman aficionado, I have not been too impressed with the live-action "Batman" films. Sure, "Batman" and "Batman Begins" are likeable, but they don't quite capture Batman like he is in the comic books. Thankfully, the 90's animated series, "Batman Beyond," and the two animated features "Subzero" and "Mask Of The Phantasm" portray the character with perfection.

Some may argue that "Subzero" is more of a "Batman"-lite story, but that really doesn't matter. It's nice to see Mr. Freeze, Barbara Gordon, and Dick Grayson getting their own stories as each of them is an important character in the Batverse. The only complaint I have with "Subzero" is the polar bears. They simply did not need to be included. Their only purpose is to serve as a dangerous obstacle for Batman and Robin.

"Phantasm" is less concerned with action and more focused on characterization and story. Bat-fans will get a kick out of seeing flashbacks of a younger/gentler Bruce Wayne, as well as seeing the surprise inclusion of a certain popular arch-nemesis.

Picture and Sound

The fullscreen picture quality on both films look sharp, but there are spots of dirt here and there.

Both of the Dolby Stereo tracks are solid as well, especially during the various explosion scenes.

Chris Rock - Never Scared

Chris Rock is probably the best black comedian since Richard Pryor. He seldom reaches such hilarious (sometimes menacing) heights, but Rock's brand of observational humor comes a lot closer to classic Pryor than, say, Eddie Murphy or Martin Lawrence (the latter whose popularity is still a mystery to me). Rock's fourth HBO special, Never Scared , isn't as consistent as some of his earlier work, but there's enough laughs here to please his fans, with the great added bonus of his first half-hour HBO special.
