Review

Sergei Eisenstein's influential masterwork "Battleship Potemkin" comes to DVD in a beautifully restored 2 disc set that will please film aficianados everywhere.
The story: Tired of the unpleasant living conditions and harsh treatment they get, the sailors on board the Battleship Potemkin mutiny against their superiors. When word of their rebellion reaches Odessa, the citizens rally around the sailors only to be mercilessly attacked by the Russian Calvary. The film is told via 5 parts. "Battleship Potemkin" doesn't have any movie stars or any real focus on characters, but it doesn't matter. Director Sergei Eisenstein is the star. The film primarily succeeds because Eisenstein's skilled direction makes the epic film about a revolution seem like a documentary. Whether we are witnessing a child being murdered and trampled or a baby carriage tumbling down steps, it can be hard to forget that these powerful images are merely fictional. It's because the direction is so ahead of its time that it has not only been endlessly analyzed by critics and historians, but has continued to be talked about since its release in 1925. Note: Disc 1 contains the restored film with English inertitles, while disc 2 contains the restored movie with Russian Inertitles and optional English subtitles.

Picture and Sound

The 1.33:1 full frame picture quality has been cleaned up tremendously, but there are plenty of lines, dirt, and jumpy picture frames present throughout. Still, this is the best print of the film I have seen on home video to date. The 5.1 Stereo Surround and 2.0 Standard Stereo tracks both contain a superb score performed by the Deutsches Filmorchestra. The music in part 5 is especially worth of mention as it makes the sequence more intense than it already is.

Extras

* Photo galleries * A 42 1/2 minute documentary titled "Tracing The Battleship Potemkin." The documentary takes a look at the restoration process, the history of the film, how it was censored, etc. The highlight includes some truly nifty footage of the premiere in which the movie theater staff are dressed up in sailor outfits.

Summary

"Battleship Potemkin" is simply a groundbreaking cinematic classic that is undeniably one of the most important films of all time. Recommended.

I'm not sure what's more surprising...the fact that a film based on events from 9/11 could be ultimately so uplifting, or that said-film is directed by such an in-your-face director as Oliver Stone. I know a lot of folks who stayed away from "World Trade Center" either because of its subject matter, or Stone's patented sensationalism. Neither reason is warranted, because like this year's more visceral (and still better) "United 93," this film eschews the hows and whys of 9/11 to focus on the selfless individual heroism present that day. But unlike "United 93," "WTC" is almost totally character-driven, about how those horrific events changed the lives of a few brave men and their families. The result is a long but poignant film that's unlike any Oliver Stone movie you've ever seen.
