Review

"BBC Atlas Of The Natural World- Africa and Europe" is another terrific set of nature documentaries from BBC Video.

“BBC Atlas Of The Natural World- Africa And Europe” is comprised of four sections which are: Wild Africa, Congo, The First Eden, and Europe: A Natural History. The six episode “Wild Africa” series (narrated by Fergal Keane) takes a look at such places as the mountains, deserts, the Savannah, coasts, the jungle, and lakes and rivers. Among the breathtaking images presented are gorgeous waterfalls, wind blowing through sand dunes, desert flowers, herds of animals in the Savannah, etc. Additionally, this series digs into the history of the land, how it was formed and how the living conditions can be harsh for animals. This is far and away the best of the sections as it is more focused and extensive. My only complaint is that I had to watch this on a television screen. I wish I could watch this in a movie theater!

John Lynch narrates the three part “Congo” special that attempts to unravel the mysterious place, as well as shed some light on the history of the location. Of course, what nature show is complete without a focus on the wildlife (mainly chimps) and human inhabitants. One can also expect to learn about some interesting myths, as well as see some extremely rare animals.

The three part “The First Eden” is narrated by THE man himself (David Attenborough). This special on the evolution of Mediterranean is a lot different than the others as the narrator appears in the flesh and tours certain areas. He also speaks at great length about certain places and topics. It’s basically more of a history lesson than a nature doc. Highlights include cave paintings, discussions about religion and bulls, and some of the wildlife in the area.

The four part “Europe: A Natural History” (narrated by Sean Pertwee) is the weakest of the four sections. Sure, you learn about how Europe became the continent it is today, but there is an excessive use of reenactments and lots of what if? CGI moments in which we see what modern cities/countries would be like back in the past.

Picture and Sound

The widescreen and fullscreen picture quality is grainy in spots, but generally the documentaries looked gorgeous on my upconverted DVD player. I only wished this set was on Hi-Def.

The Dolby Digital audio track was solid all around. The narration, the animal and weather noises, and the music all come through the speakers loud and clear.

Extras

* Trailers for "Blue Planet," "Planet Earth," "Pyramid," "Walking With Dinosaurs," "Walking With Cavemen," "Walking With Beasts," "History Of World War 2," and a BBC America ad.
* On each disc there is an enhanced play option which is basically a pop up fact feature.
* "The Nile: Crocodiles And Kings, The Great Floods" is a comprehensive look at the importance of the Nile River and how so many people and animals rely on it. Sadly, this two episode series does contain lousy narration by Simon MacCorkindale and some lame recreations.
* "Madagascar: Spirit Of The Forest" is an older nature special with a focus on lemurs and plant life.
* "Scandinavia: Lands Of The Midnight Sun and Fresh Waters, Salt Seas" is a quiet, but beautiful two part nature special.
* "Iceland: Fire And Ice" talks about how Iceland was born of a volcano, and gives more insight into the country.
