This is the one that started it all; the very first Beach movie. Annette and Frankie star but curiously get second billing to Bob Cummings (Love That Bob) and Dorothy Malone (Peyton Place). Harvey Lembeck makes his first appearance as Von Zipper, and we also get performances from Morey Amsterdam, the exotic European Eva Six, and Vincent Price in an uncredited cameo as "Big Daddy". Musical guests are Dick Dale and the Deltones. Dick is still riding that wave!
In the opening, Frankie and Annette are heading for the beach for what Frankie believes is a "quiet weekend together". While he is busy trying to put his tongue back in his mouth ( pant, pant ), Annette, the wholesome, all-American girl, has schemed to shatter Frankie's plans by inviting the whole gang to stay with them, as she doesn't trust being alone with Frankie. Then the jealousy games begin, along with the fun. Frankie goes for Eva to make Annette jealous and Annette counters by flirting with every boy on the beach. It's all good clean fun, with singing, dancing, and necking! Like every other red blooded American male, I was ga-ga over Annette and her-ahem, assets. She helped stimulate the male population in the U.S. ever since Mickey Mouse Club and those sweaters she wore on that show. The story goes that Uncle Walt personally asked her not to appear in a bikini in these films, which Annette honored. She had enormous respect for the man. Frankie played the character who represented every male in the audience with his frustrated lust. Sorry, I digress. Bob Cummings , sporting a beard, plays a professor who is disgusted by the teens frolicking in the sand and plots to expose the kids as deviants. It's up to the kids to prove they are worthy. Quite a role for Cummings, who for years played the absolute womanizer on his television show, Love That Bob. The movie is a snapshot of America in early 1964. After Kennedy, before the Beatles. My, how things would change in the next few years.

Picture and Sound

Picture-Originally produced by American International Pictures in Pathecolor and Panavision, MGM Home Video has produced a DVD that is pristine in clarity. Colors are rich and full, with no fade outs and sharp focus. No dirt or artifacts were noticed in this 83 minute beach romp. The DVD has picture options for both widescreen format (enhanced for widescreen TV) and fullscreen. It's very clean for a 1964 film. Sound-Dolby Digital mono is all we have through two front channels but it is acceptable and doesn't diminish the classic dialog (choke). Subtitles are available in French and Spanish.

Extras

http://mgm.com/dvd Nothing much on the disc except the theatrical trailer. The packaging on all the Beach DVDs series released by MGM Home Video include some Fun Facts, such as guys wearing black leather jackets and greased hair received 50% off burgers and Cokes at the theaters. It would have been nice to have some commentary from Frankie; unfortunately, Annette probably wouldn't be able to do it any longer, which is sad. I bet they have great memories about the making of these films.

Summary

http://mgm.com/dvd It's fun, it's hokey, it's from a time of innocence in America when the boys chased the girls and the girls, while wanting it just as much as the guys, were still raised to be "respectable". It is all very innocent and a kick to watch. MGM Home Video has treated the film well and did a great job on the digital transfer, presenting it in widescreen and fullscreen choices. It would be a great rental and every fan of Annette and Frankie will want this one-it is the original. PERSONAL NOTE: My apologies to everyone involved in the making of this picture (especially Annette). The review was all in fun. I really do respect you! Annette, we still love you and hang tough. We know you are on a difficult journey.

Cars

Category: DVD Reviews
How do you gauge a perfect 'family' film? For me, that's easy. When this screener showed up in the mail, my 2 year old was excited, my 11 year old was excited, my wife was excited, and of course, so was I. Pixar movies are about as close as viewers get to a sure thing, and they are probably the only studio who makes true family pictures as opposed to kid movies. They're also the only studio I can think of that's never put out a bad movie. Their worst, "The Incredibles," is still far better than any CG film by other studios. Even now, with CG animation no longer a novelty, as far as family films go, Pixar movies are in a class by themselves. No wonder Disney shelled out $7 Billion to buy them out. Though it got more mixed reviews than other Pixar flicks, as far as I'm concerned, "Cars" is one of the best films they ever made. It's funny, charming, fast-moving, brilliantly animated, and displays a welcome amount of narrative maturity.
