Review

One of the most requested titles for DVD, Fox has finally released this Kurt Russell action, adventure flick on a two disc set, with a whole disc full of extras. The film has elements of science fiction, mythology, horror, romance, comedy, and action and is not to be missed. It is just plain fun!
Jack Burton (Russell) visits an old friend who is going to pick up his wife-to-be at the airport. She is kidnapped at the airport by Chinese gang members and as Russell and friend try to rescue her, they stumble upon an even deeper mystery surrounding a 2000 year old sorcerer named Lo Pan. Lo pan has taken the girl because she has green eyes and must marry her to appease an ancient Chinese god. Of course, Russell, Kim Cattrall, and friends infiltrate the Chinese underground to rescue her. The story is high action from start to finish and is quite humorous. Russell's character is a big blowhard, like Snake Pliskin in the "Escape From" films but can't quite follow through with his bragging. His gun jams because he forgot to take off the safety, his mouth gets him beat up a lot, and in one memorable scene, when he fire the gun in the air, it knocks part of the ceiling loose and hits him on the head. Russell and Cattrall also spare off while fighting off their mutual attraction to one another.

Picture and Sound

Picture-A beautiful anamorphic transfer has been done by Fox for this double disc set. Computer graphic menu screens are animated with dialog from the film with every selection. The intro to the menu is spectacular. Menu selection are chosen by lightning bolts coming out of the hands of the one of the "three storms". Sound-A 5.1 soundtrack, available in Dolby digital and DTS are another highlight of the disc. This is the perfect movie for such a soundtrack, with every special effect and action sequence benefiting from the superior sound. Dynamic range is outstanding and the soundtrack music rocks.

Extras

The second disc includes deleted scenes of the underground approach before the finale, alternate and extended battle scenes, and an alternate ending to the film. There is also an interview with Richard Edlund, who created the special effects, with a multi-angle option to view stills while he explains the various monsters and their creation for the film. A featurette on the making of the film with interviews from cast and director Carpenter is another bonus film included. A film gallery, production notes, magazine articles, a music video and trailers are also included on the bonus disc. It's a great package of extras.

Summary

The long wait for this disc is over and it was worth the wait. Fox has done an excellent job in their package. The disc is a treat in all areas and is technically a great showcase disc. The film itself is entertaining throughout and loaded with humor and action. The second disc gives added depth to the film and its stars and production crew. You can't go wrong with this one.
