Review

Looking for a different romantic comedy for Valentine's Day? This Australian, award winning film might just be the ticket. It is charming and has a bit of fantasy built right in. For people who like swing music, this film is for you as well. The complete Australian cast, led by Max Cullen, perform their roles well in this light comedy.
Billy is a hardware store owner who is not very successful. By night, he leads a small jazz band that plays at the local pub. While he likes the hairdresser down the street, played by Kris McQuade, Billy is still burnt from his divorce, having to raise his teenage daughter by himself. Rachel Coopes does a fine job in her debut performance as Billy's daughter. One miraculous night, Billy sees shooting stars and climbs to the roof to investigate and admire them, as Billy is a dreamer. He dreams of becoming a successful singer and band leader. His favorite singer is Lady Day, Billie Holiday. The next day, Billy discovers he has been given a gift -Billie Holiday's voice. Cullen does a wonderful job of imitating Holiday. Almost immediately, his band starts to gel and develop a following, all the while Billy sees visions of Holiday waiting in the wings to encourage him. Will success spoil Billy? Will he find the courage to perform on his own and take a chance on love with the woman who is waiting for him?

A theatrical trailer is all that is offered as an extra on the DVD. Disappointing.

Summary

This romantic fantasy is a refreshing change of pace for those of you looking for an unusual film for Valentine's. It is simple yet charming. Production values are high and the music will have all swing jazz fans wanting more. Technically, this is a very good disc, with excellent musical emphasis. It's a charming sleeper that you will enjoy.

Hellraiser: 20th Anniversary Edition

Only the first three "Hellraiser" movies are worth watching. And if I'm to be honest, as original and disturbing as the first film is, the "Hellraisers II & III" are a lot more nasty fun. Still, the original is as probably as close as movies ever got to capturing the twisted spirit of Clive Barker's early stories. Now Anchor Bay serves up an umpteenth chance to see where it all started with this 20th Anniversary Edition. Longtime fans probably already have this in their collections, and while the picture and sound are decent, it isn't a huge improvement over some previous releases. This one also includes some new bonus features, in addition to material previously included in other editions, which might make this version worthwhile to hardcore fans.
