Review

Billy Joel has been on the music scene for a quarter of a century and shocked the pop world when he announced his "retirement" from creating more pop music to focus on classical composing. This anthology of Joel's more recent songs (his last three albums) is a compilation of videos and songs. Interspersed between the videos are Joel's comments about each song and how he composed it, what inspires him to write, his influences and shows what a total musician he is.
The videos offered here are a mixture of live concert video, studio promotions, and live-in studio videos. Three of the videos are from a previous greatest hits video collection (I have them on Laserdisc). Most taken from his last three albums-Storm Front, The Bridge and The River Of Dreams-his final pop album. The songs on this DVD include: Keeping The Faith-costarring a cast of hundreds and his then wife Christie Brinkley A Matter Of Trust-New York in the summer time-I love the "Shut Up" lady! Baby Grand-Duet with Ray Charles Leningrad-Joel's poignant story of a man he befriended while touring the Soviet Union in the late 1980's. We Didn't Start The Fire-Joel's instant history lesson about being a baby boomer-Turn the lyric option on for this one! I Go To Extremes-About being manic depressive And So It Goes- A live version of a thoughtful love song in Black and White The Downeaster "Alexa"-Joel's folk song for fisherman and their struggle to survive in today's economy Shameless-A tribute to Jimi Hendrix It's All About Soul- A studio live cut, complete with backup singers No Mans Land-Another Live number Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)-Black and White footage with children dressed as angels, written for his child Hey Girl-Billy does Motown in this sixties hit The River Of Dreams-A slick music video with another large cast

Extras

Like most music discs, the disc doesn't have a lot of extra features but does include a lyrics option (English subtitles) and the enhanced menu options already mentioned. A making of featurette for some of the videos would have been a nice feature, such as the Downeaster Alexa, which Joel strongly believed in (He actually went out with fishermen to publicize their cause), Leningrad (footage of Joel and Victor meeting in Russia), or River Of Dreams, which PBS developed into an hour long special when it was first released. However, these are just suggestions for future DVD's for Columbia-Sony.

Summary

If you like Billy Joel, this is an excellent compilation of his best from his last three albums. The picture and sound are excellent and Joel's insights into his own music is a great extra. I would like to see his earlier work come out on DVD as well, along with his concert from Long Island (also on laserdisc). These would be a welcome addition, especially since Joel will not be doing any future music. This is a good start and I'm sure the future Billy Joel-Live at Yankee Stadium, will have the same great quality from Columbia. Just wish there was more!

Some of the things I truly miss from the 70's and 80's film going experience. Good car chases where you can stop shaking the camera, long waits to see anticipated blockbusters, people who knew how to behave in the theaters and the epic crime drama. How appropriate that the man who was responsible for one of the most underrated films of the 80's, THIEF, would make arguably make the best film of '95 with HEAT.
