The plot: Based on the comic series of the same name, “Birds Of Prey” revolves around the daughter of Batman and Catwoman Helena Kyle (who is also known as the crime fighter Huntress), the Oracle (Barbara Gordon’s post-Batgirl identity) and a psychic teen named Dinah. Together the three battle villains that plague New Gotham. This complete series DVD set contains all 13 episodes of the short-lived series.

As big of a comic book fan as I am, I actually missed “Birds Of Prey” when it aired. It’s a real shame too as this is as fun a superhero series as “Smallville.” Granted, the series has several corny lines/scenes and distracting pop music (much like “Smallville”), but there’s plenty of kick-butt action and comic references to keep fanboys and fangirls pleased. Some of the geeky highlights include “Batman” villains Clayface and Harley Quinn and even Batman, Catwoman, and Joker themselves who appear via flashbacks As an added treat, the Joker is voiced by Mark Hamill who also voiced the character in the classic 90’s animated “Batman” series.

One of the most impressive aspects of the show is the sets and gadgets. The production design team went to great lengths to create a believable Gotham City look and created plenty of nifty Batman-like gadgets for the Huntress to use.

I also have to give credit to the cast, especially Dina Meyer as the Oracle/Barbara Gordon. Ever since I saw her in “Starship Troopers,” I thought she was a solid actress that didn’t get enough good roles. Thankfully, she gets a nice meaty role here to sink her teeth into and she does a great job with it. I also thought Mia Sara (“Ferris Beuller’s Day Off”) made a nice crazy and maniacal Harley Quinn. She clearly was having a blast playing the role of a villain.
