The short-lived "Blade" TV series makes its way to DVD.
The story arc of the 13 episode first (and only) season of "Blade" concerns the title character enlisting the help of a newly turned female vampire named Krista. You see, Blade wants Krista to infiltrate the villainous House Of Chthon to find out what their plans are, and so on. Will Krista be found out? Can Blade survive the hordes of vampires? For those who enjoyed the first "Blade" film but loathed the two sequels, you'll be happy to know that the series is superior to "Blade 2" and "Blade: Trinity." Unfortunately, that is not saying much. The series starts out promising enough with a high energy, action-packed pilot episode, but the show quickly falls apart. I'm not sure if they spent all their money on the first episode, but the show goes nowhere faster. I appreciate the fact that the season contains one long story arc, but there isn't enough forward movement to maintain one's interest. There's only so much bloody vampire slaying one can watch before it becomes tiring. The show also suffers from a decidedly amateurish cast. Sticky Fingaz (Blade) and Jill Wagner (Krista) are passable, but their acting abilities are limited. In addition, the series really suffers from not having the characters of Whistler and his daughter and Hannibal King. A bad move on the writer's part. Note: This DVD set contains the unrated and revamped versions of the episodes. Translation: More blood and partial female nudity.

Picture and Sound

The 1.78:1 widescreen picture quality looks like your average TV show on DVD (meaning the quality is average at best). The Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound audio track is decent enough, but the dialogue is a bit too low in spots.

Extras

* Trailers for "The Butterfly Effect 2," "Undisputed 2," "Tenacious D In The Pic Of Destiny," "Pan's Labyrinth," "The Number 23," "Superman: Doomsday," and "Doctor Strange." * DVD-ROM Features. * 8 TV promos. * A 61 minute documentary titled "Turning Blade." The docu looks at the transition of taking the character from film to TV, the cast, the weapons, wirework, costumes, tattoo, etc. * Two commentary tracks. One by Peter O'Fallon and the other by David Goyer and Geoff Johns. The Goyer/Johns track is a fun listen. The two talk about casting the show, comic books, and other tidbits that will please fans.

Summary

Those expecting "Blade" to be the next "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" will be sorely disappointed. As is, "Blade" is a passable, albeit forgettable series.

August Rush

Category: DVD Reviews
"August Rush" is a musical, modern day fairy tale that stars Keri Russell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Robin Williams, Terrence Howard, and Freddie Highmore as August. The film tells the story of Evan, an orphan, who hears music where he is. In in the depressing boys home he is in, he hears music in all that surrounds him. Evan is the result of a one night encounter by classic cellist Keri Russell, and upcoming rock star Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Terrence Howard plays a social worker assigned to the boy, who knows he has a hidden talent. Evan decides to seek out his parents after he "hears them" calling to him and flees to New York. Unfortunately, both Russell and Rhys Meyers have moved on in their lives, she being in Chicago and he a business man in San Francisco. However, both have never forgotten each other and have never been satisfied in their lives. When Evan reaches New York, he is taken in by a man(Robin Willims) who "sponsors" young musicians who play on the street, and live in the abandoned Fillmore East theater. Williams recognizes Evan's talent and soon he is making a lot of money for Williams by playing at Washington Square. Through everything and all his encounters, Evan, renamed August Rush by Williams, seeks his family and feels that if he plays, they will come.
