Review

When The Blair Witch Project was released in 1999 and made some good money at the box office, I guess you could say that it was inevitable that another one would be made. Then in 2000, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 was released to poor box office numbers in the first week of release, then a quick drop from the top 10. For some reason, no one really cared about the movie. The critics trashed the film and it only seemed to stay in theatres for no longer than a week. But maybe that's because of the buzz, or lack their-of.
Book of Shadows plays as if The Blair Witch Project was just a movie. One of our main character, Jeff, who is obsessed with it and even has his own little "Blair Witch Hunt" tour leads a couple of customers to go out into the woods with him. Along for the ride are Kim, Erica, Tristen, and Stephen. After wandering around awhile, they set up camp inside the house from the first film. Jeff sets up a ton of video equipment and then brings out the beer for a little party. But before the night is through, another tour group passes by and our characters have to find a way to get rid of them. They do and the night is over. When they wake up the next morning, their camp is trashed and the video equipment is in pieces. To make matters worse, they find out the other tour group was killed. The rest of the movie deals with them trying to figure out what happened during the night. For all accounts the first film should have been a flop so a sequel would have never been made in the first place. It is not a horrible film but it is full of lame plots and numerous plot-holes. This isn't directors Joe Berlinger's fault though. He did his job decent enough and probably could have made a better film if it wasn't so rushed. It seemed as if Artisan didn't care about making a good film, just about the money they thought they could get being as the first one was such a "commercial" success.

Picture and Sound

Video: Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 is presented in it's original 1.85:1 aspect ratio, with a transfer that is anamorphic. The colors are bright and are always sharp. A little pixelation occurs during some of the scenes but it doesn't happen very often and it isn't too noticeable. I didn't notice any other thing wrong with the transfer except for that minor thing I mentioned above. Sound: The Video for Book of Shadows was excellent and the audio is really good as well. It is presented in English 5.1 Dolby Digital surround. The music, dialogue, and background effects are played very well. There is also French and Spanish 2.0 surround tracks. English only captions are also available.

Extras

Artisan has supplied Book of Shadow's with a fair amount of extras. First up we have an audio commentary by Writer and Director Joe Berlinger. It is entertaining and he explains pretty much the making of the film. It is well worth a listen if you can stand to watch the movie again. Then we have a promo film called The Secrets of Esrever. It is basically a short feature on the hidden symbols used in the movie. When the 3-minute film is over, you are told to rewind it so you can see letters that are put at the bottom of the screen. Finally, once you have the words spelled out, it will take you to the scenes in the movie that contain the optical illusions. It's an interesting idea yet it is really kind of stupid. The biggest thing of all is the DVD actually contains the film's soundtrack on the reverse side of the disc. It has been talked about before but this is the first time it has been done. It is a nice idea and if you're a fan of the music, you're in luck because basically you're getting the soundtrack for free. Finally we have the Cast and Crew biographies / filmographies, an 8-page production notes found inside the keep case, and a promo booklet with all kinds of Blair Witch goodies you can buy. And the theatrical trailer can be found if you can find all of the symbols in the submenus.

Summary

If you're a fan of the Blair Witch Project, you might give this one a rent. Artisan has done a good job with the DVD. The Video is excellent and the Audio is just as good. The extras are decent too with the worthwhile commentary and the CD soundtrack on the DVD. The critics may have been too hard on this film so if you watch it with an open mind, you may not be too disappointed.

Howling III, The

Category: DVD Reviews
The Howling was a great success from both critics and fans. Followed by that was The Howling II, which was horrible in all aspects. The fans of the original were disappointed and the critics are severely harsh on it. So the Director of the sequel decided to try and make it up to the fans by making The Howling 3, a satire of the original two. Sadly he was unsuccessful at doing so. Of course he had to call the movie Marsupials, which is probably one of the least scary creatures on the face of the planet.
