Review

Billy Turner (Judd Nelson, THE BREAKFAST CLUB) returns home to BLUE CITY expecting to receive the usual lukewarm welcome from his mayor father after a few years’ estrangement. When Billy finds out that his father was murdered, and although foul play is suspected the cops still have yet to find the culprit, he’s determined to find his father’s killer and make him pay, by any means necessary. To help him in his quest for the truth, he recruits an old pal from his hell-raising days Joey (David Caurso, CSI: MIAMI), whose little sister Annie (Ally Sheedy, THE BREAKFAST CLUB) is all grown up now.


BLUE CITY is the kind of film that even those of us who swoon over Nelson’s turn as John Bender can claim we’ve never even heard of before. And for good reason. The blurb on the back of the case bills the film as a “taut thriller.” I beg to differ. The plot, though continuously driving forward Billy’s goal of tracking down his father’s killer, is only loosely put together. And although you’re given the lame textbook reason for the kid’s determination to uncover the truth, it never quite seems like it should be that important to him. Moreover, Billy Turner is basically John Bender after a few years traveling the world; he’s the same smart assed, wise cracking guy who doesn’t really care what you think, but could still use the love of a good woman. Nelson and Sheedy have about zero chemistry on screen, and the scene where Billy and Annie fall into bed together (inevitable though you knew it was) comes across as awkward and forced.

The real surprise to me was David Caruso, who I didn’t recognize until the second time he appeared on screen. Although he’s in a Florida setting and about 30-years-old at the time, this film took place in an era before he grew into his face.

There aren’t enough films featuring an 80’s-era, soulful-eyed Nelson, in my opinion. That being said, I’d really only recommend purchase of this film to those fans who want a break every now and then from re-watching THE BREAKFAST CLUB for the umpteenth time to get their fix.

Picture and Sound

The wobbly and scratched picture that appears at the top of the film with the Paramount logo had me a little worried about the film, but picture and sound during the film, while not spectacular, are average with nothing to distract.
