Review
This modern retelling of the famous mutiny follows in the great traditions of the other Mutiny On The Bounty films. The Dino Delaurentiis production features intense acting from Mel Gibson as Fletcher Christian and Anthony Hopkins as Lt.Captain Bligh. Featured in supporting roles are Sir Laurence Olivier, Edward Fox, Daniel Day Lewis and Liam Neeson in an early role. It's hard to beat a cast like that and the Bounty is an excellent remake.
While other Hollywood tales of this famous Mutiny concentrated on the cruelty of Bligh, first in the classic performance by Charles Laughton, and later by Trevor Howard, this tale concentrates more on the two principle characters, Bligh and Christian. It takes a very balanced approach to the incidents that occurred, without condemning either man. Bligh is friends with Christian, and recruits him to accompany him to Tahiti to pick up breadfruit trees to then exchange for slave food in Jamaica. Once at sea, Bligh's discipline comes into focus but is never that outrageous for the British Navy and its rules of the day. Bligh is a strict Navy man and expectations for his crew are high. Once they reach Tahiti, with its exotic natives, the crew is ready for shore leave. Bligh feels required to let the crew participate with and mingle with the natives while they are there to raise the plants they will transport. Many of the native customs are too risqu
Picture and Sound
Picture-The widescreen anamorphic print used in the DVD transfer is in great shape, with rich, saturated colors. Just a few rare specks of dust are noticeable in this two hour plus movie. Artifacts are not present at all. It is a very clean DVD with sharp focus and it has been preserved well. Sound-A very nice 5. 1 Dolby sound mix highlights the film, with a rich soundtrack by Vangelis (Chariots of Fire). The booming bass of his keyboard are present throughout and invoke the correct mood, signaling key incidents leading to the mutiny. The channel separation is well placed and very discreet for an older film, with information being utilized by all channels.
Extras
An original trailer and nothing more. Disappointing as I'm sure some "making of footage" exists for this film. Commentary on production would have been interesting to hear, as a lot of work went into the authenticity of the native life and customs.
Summary
http://mgm.com/dvd An excellent transfer, powerful sound mix, and great cast performances highlight this bare bones DVD from MGM Home Video. Early roles by Daniel Day Lewis and Liam Neeson are also a treat to watch. The lack of extras is disappointing but it is still a very good disc technically and fans of Hopkins and Gibson will enjoy this adaptation.
