http://www.vcihomevideo.com/ This is a wonderful family DVD from VCI Entertainment that has fully restored this tale of a Mexican boy who raises a calf to a strong bull and how special their relationship becomes and the sacrifices the boy makes for his pet . Michel Ray is introduced in this true story written for the screen by Dalton Trumbo (Robert Rich). He won an Academy Award for the story writing in this film but couldn't accept it as he was being blacklisted by the Motion Picture Industry and was using Robert Rich as an alias.
The story introduces us to the boy and his family and the film centers on the boy's actions throughout the film. After the calf is born, he raises it as a pet and when the calf 's ownership is called into dispute, the boy writes to the former owner who grants him ownership of the bull. All is fine until the untimely death of the owner, when the bull is auctioned off to fight in the bullring in Mexico City. Once again, the boy sets out to save his beloved bull. The film is special because it also shows a loving , caring family that has pride and strength, even though they are poor and illiterate. It also strives the importance of education in the scenes at the little school house where the boy learns of the history of Mexico. His ability to read and write help him in his quests to save the bull. This is not a cute animal movie but rather a story of a relationship between animal and human, which is mature and strong. The bullfight scenes may be questionable for younger viewers-not that they are bloody but because its hard to explain this sport of tradition to youngsters.

Picture and Sound

Picture-A beautiful digital transfer offers us a 2.35:1 widescreen picture with restored Technicolor that is rich in color and barely has a speck of dirt or scratches. Color shifts are minimal and VCI Entertainment did an excellent job on this DVD. Night scenes are a bit dark and a small adjustment might have to be made to the contrast in these short spots but overall the color is glorious! No artifacts were noticeable and the characters are sharp and in focus. Sound-Although only Dolby 2.0 channel sound, the soundtrack , with music by Victor Young is equally restored and is rich and full. At times, it was hard to believe it was only two channel sound, as the soundtrack music fills the room. The audio is boosted well by the Dolby. It is true stereo as well with good separation of information through the channels. Dialog is clearly understood.

Extras

Not much in this department to my disappointment. No subtitles or captions. We get a theatrical trailer and also get some star bios. Remember blonde Joi Lansing? She was the sweater girl in "Love That Bob".; although she gets a major credit for this film, her part is insignificant to the story. Also, Rodolfo Hoyos is not covered, who plays the father of the boy. He was a well known character actor in Hollywood and deserved a mention.

http://www.vcihomevideo.com/ A great DVD with good family values-although the bull fighting might be hard to explain to youngsters that VCI Entertainment has restored to all its Technicolor glory! While lacking any significant extras, the superb picture and gorgeous sound make this DVD a winner.

"Tuck Everlasting" is unlike most modern movies passing themselves off as "family" films, where slapstick, gross humor or high-concept ideas in which selling Happy Meals and action figures are the main motives behind their conception. Despite being one of the studios most guilty of turning the family film into a mere product, Disney, on occasion, produces films of exceptional quality (such as "The Rookie" or "The Princess Diaries") that just happen to be rated G or PG, where being an adult does not necessarily mean you can't enjoy it. Based on the popular young adult fantasy novel by Natalie Bobbitt, this movie is lovingly adapted from its source material, does not dumb-down its basic concept for its audience, and raises interesting questions regarding the concept and ramifications of immortality.
