Review

Edward Burns first feature won a Best Picture at the Sundance Film Festival and established him as a filmmaker to watch. This tale of three Irish-American brothers living on Long Island is a romantic comedy , shot on a shoestring budget has a definite "indie" look about it. Starring along with Burns, who also directed and wrote the story are Jack Mulcahy, Mike McGlone, Connie Britton and Maxine Bahns.
The story opens with Burns' mother telling him she is going back to Ireland to be with the man she loves. Five years later, the brothers, who have a habit of drinking beer and talking about their relationships. The oldest brother, played by Jack Mulcahy, has been married five years and has a stable marriage. Mike McGlone has a steady relationship with a girl but is not crazy about pushing it to the next step of marriage. Burns, playing the independent free thinker, has just broken up with his girl friend because she wanted to get married and he is afraid of commitment. The film delves deeply into relationships and how these three brothers deal with their individual problems and relationships. Married Jack is tempted by a single woman into an affair, Patrick(McGlone) isn't sure his girl is the One and soon breaks up to find another living down the street from Jack. Barry meets a fascinating, beautiful girl and is having a hard time admitting to others and himself that the has fallen in love. Maxine Bahns, as Audry, his new love, is a strong character that understands Barry, loves him, but is unwilling to wait for him while he tries to confront his fears. Connie Britton, as Jack's wife, is also a strong , smart character who wants children. This fact scares Jack right into the waiting arms of a single woman who wants an affair with a married man.

Picture and Sound

Picture-This DVD from Fox Home Entertainment is presented on the double disc in both fullscreen and widescreen formats. The film quality is at times grainy and stark, with pale colors. Burn's shots have a very realistic feel to them, as if we are observing these brothers through an open window. The strengths of this film are not in the cinematography. Sound- Fox Home Entertainment remixed the soundtrack for this DVD, adding a stereo soundtrack to the original mono, which is also offered on the DVD. No overdubs on this, as it was all shot on location, along with the dialog. The conversations, which make up this film are all clearly understood and sound completely natural. Background noises are all included, just like real life!

Extras

Included on the DVD is commentary by Burns, theatrical trailers, and the language features already mentioned. Nothing too spectacular her but the film speaks for itself. No crazy action sequences or stunt double work here; just a tale of three brothers.

Summary

For fans of Burn's "She's The One", this is an interesting film, as it contains a lot of the same elements, including some of the same actors. The story is very different however, and takes on a more serious tone than did "She's The One". Burn's and Bahns are fantastic together in their turbulent relationship, and Jack Mulcahy does an excellent job as the confused, loyal older brother. Mike McGlone has the comedy role again, playing his part with energy. The picture quality is so-so, as is the sound but that's not what this film is about. For a good film about relationships, this film is a winner.

Fear Factor - The First Season

Category: DVD Reviews
"Fear Factor" is sort of the bastard son of "Survivor," but is far less pretentious, making no bones about what it really is...an exploitative game show, with no aspirations other than to make the viewer ponder whether or not the stunts these contestants are required to perform are worth $50,000 (the cash prize awarded to the winner). Asking yourself if you're willing to eat bugs, traverse great heights or be mauled by attack dogs is part of what makes the show so fun, just like you used to do with your buddies when you'd ask dumb stuff like "Would you eat puke for a thousand bucks?" What ultimately makes "Fear Factor" a more rewarding viewing experience than the melodramatic "Survivor" is that each episode is self-contained. There's no waiting until next week to see what happens. With each episode, you're introduced to six contestants, and an hour later, there's a winner.
