Review

Do you sometimes wonder how or why a film gets made? Do you try to ponder who exactly the demographic is for the film in question? These are the questions that flooded my mind as I watched the little seen box office bomb "The Brothers Solomon.
The story: As their father is nearing the end of his life, Dean and John Solomon vow to make their pops proud by attempting to give him a grandchild. The problem is, the brothers are completely inept at socializing with women and they don't know the first thing about raising a child. "The Brothers Solomon" is the type of film that makes it abundantly clear that cinema is indeed on a downward spiral. Not only does this "comedy" play like a stretched out YouTube short, but the two dorky, ignorant, smiling characters reach Carrot Top levels of annoyance. Had I not been assigned to review this film, I would have ejected the disc after the first minute. From the pedophile humor to the plane banner, virtually every single second of the film is excruciating to watch. The only thing that helped kill time was looking for cameos by the likes of Bill Hader, Sam Lloyd, and Jenna Fischer.

Picture and Sound

I have nothing bad to say about the 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen picture quality. It's as clean as can be. The English 5.1 Dolby Digital audio track is equally impressive and is superior to most comedic DVD releases.

Extras

* 13 Sony previews * 9 extended/deleted scenes including one which involves a fart machine. That's the kind of film this is people. * An utterly pointless two minute forty-four second featurette called "The Fine Art Of Creating A Specimen." * A 16 1/2 minute "Making Of" featuring Bob Odenkirk cracking jokes, interviews, set footage, bla bla bla. * A commentary with Will Arnett and Will Forte that is a trillion times better than the film. They are much funnier when they AREN'T acting.

Summary

"The Brothers Solomon" is a painful laugh-free comedy that rightfully deserves a spot on my "Worst Films Of 2007" list.

I have long-kept a mental list of movies I've always wanted to see but never got around to. "The Commitments" was one of those movies, and this 2-disc Collector's Edition from Fox is the first time I actually sat and watched it. I can see why the film has its admirers; it's a lot of fun, with decent performances, good direction and terrific music. But I dunno...maybe after reading and hearing so much about for so long my expectations were too high; I thought it was good, but not necessarily great. One thing is certain...fans of the film are going to absolutely love this DVD.
