Review

This surprising hit film from 1992 launched a very successful television series and has a cult following. Kristy Swanson stars as Buffy, a typical California teenage cheerleader, who has inherited the vampire slaying ability from her ancestors. The film also stars Luke Perry as her romantic lead, Donald Sutherland as the wise, vampire killer-teacher, and Paul Reubens with Rutger Hauer in campy roles as the vampires.
Buffy goal in life is to "marry Christian Slater and die", and also loves to shop with her friends at the local mall. This changes when she meets Sutherland who informs her of her abilities and teaches her the art of vampire slaying. Perry stumbles across Buffy after one of his friends turns into an "undead". Paul Reubens stars as the "Renfield" in this vampire outing, doing dirty deeds for his master, Rutger Hauer. The story is a blending of comedy and horror and is never taken too seriously. Gore is minimal in the PG-13 film, with sexual innuendo just as prevalent as the vampire battles. Swanson shows lots of energy in her role but I found it hard to believe she was a teen. Her classic beauty made her look older but her dialog was right on the money for the part.

Picture and Sound

Picture-A very good anamorphic transfer from Fox, with few artifacts and sharp detail. Colors are also bright and realistic. The majority of the film is shot at night (naturally), and the contrast is adjusted accordingly for those shots. Sound-A 4.0 surround Dolby digital signal incorporates the original soundtrack from the film, with good dynamic range and separation of channels. The booming music in the soundtrack makes good use of the sub-woofer channel.

Extras

The disc has minimal extras with a small featurette, subtitles in English and Spanish, a theatrical trailer and two television spots. Commentary from director or stars would have made this disc much better in value.

Summary

The original film is campy and fun, with some great dialog and scenes. I especially liked the Prom ending and the showdown with the undead, who crash the party. It is a very enjoyable 90 minutes and a good disc technically. The DVD is short on extras but still a must have for "Buffy" fans.
