Review

The disc presentation of the classic western, that made Robert Redford the hunk he became, is a Special Edition with lots of extras. This tale of the two"Yankee Bandidos" reinforced Paul Newman's stature at the box office and brought to life two of the west's most colorful characters of legend. It has action, suspense, humor, and romance with a lively soundtrack.
Butch and Sundance rob trains and banks in the west but find the routine beginning to be boring until one day, as they rob the Flyer, they are chased by a posse that doesn't give up. "Who are those guys?", is now a famous line in cinema. After a memorable chase across mountains, rivers, rocks, and towns, the two learn that the posse, which has been hired to track them down and kill them, is still after them. They then make a decision to leave the West and travel to Bolivia, where the banks are still wide open. The movie is a true buddy picture and Katherine Ross, as Etta Place adds a third dimension, as Sundance's lover but also as Butch's friend. Memorable performances by Kenneth Mars as the town sheriff, Henry Jones, as a bicycle salesman, Jeff Corey as a plain talking Marshall, and Strother Martin as an old "colorful" character, also highlight this great film. "Bingo!"

Picture and Sound

Picture- The widescreen presentation is pristine and clean as you can get. The print looks brand new and the cinematography is breathtaking. All DVDs should look this good. No artifacts were noticed in the 110 minute presentation. The animated menus are also creative and fun. Sound-Major disappointment here! Only Dolby Digital 2.0 sound. I'm sure that is all Fox had to work with but still, the music is a real highlight of this film and a remix could have made this an outstanding disc. The disc does include an extra language track in French mono. It is also THX certified and is very clean.

Extras

The disc is loaded with extras as this is a Special Edition. Commentary tracks include George Roy Hill, the director, Hal David, the Lyricist, Associate Producer Robert Crawford and Cinematographer Conrad Hall. There are 1994 interviews with the principles of the film, a making of documentary, production notes, an alternate credit roll, and 3 theatrical trailers. These extras all bring new insights into this classic and are refreshing to hear for the first time.

Summary

This Special Edition is worthy of the title. Besides an excellent picture in widescreen, the extras on this disc are well worth the price for fans of the film. The only downside was the soundtrack , as I am spoiled on 5.1 Dolby. It is still is a worthy disc to add to your collection of titles.

First, this is not another rehash of the old television series. Those discs have been covered by us already. Through the success of the series, Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels starred in two big budget motion pictures distributed by Warner Brothers in the late fifties. This DVD is the first feature film.
