Being a fan of David Duchovny, I was rather looking forward to "Californication" even though I loathe sitcoms for the most part. I have always felt that sitcoms were detestable formulaic shows that recycle the same stand alone plots that have appeared in other sitcoms over the years. Thankfully, "Californication" is unlike any sitcom on air and is a refreshing change of pace.

The series revolves around author Hank Moody who is struggling in life. Not only is he unsure of what to write next but he's still trying to get over the fact that his wife has left him and that she is now with another man. He still gets to see her when he visits his daughter, and he really wants to win her back. Unfortunately, Hank is fighting an uphill battle as his womanizing ways and his refusal to change land him in deep trouble. Can Hank somehow turn his life around?

The 12 episode season 1 of "Californication" is both deeply funny and touching. Yes, Hank may be a unlikeable bastard at times, but he is a sympathetic character that you can't help but root for. You want him to be able to work things out with his family. It's what keeps you tuning in.

Along with the smart scripts and zippy dialogue, it's the cast that makes the show stand out. Those who think Duchovny has no range should no doubt check this show out as he proves he can do characters besides Mulder. The supporting cast should not be forgotten either. Evan Handler shines as Hank's agent, Rachel Miner is wickedly delightful and sexy, and Madeleine Martin and Natascha McElhon are both superb as Hank's daughter and ex wife.

In conclusion, I whole heartedly recommend "Californication" for anyone looking for a GOOD adult comedy. I can't wait to see what happens in season 2.
