The concept of The Car , in which an automobile from Hell shows up to turn the good and not-so-good folks of a small desert town into road pizza, is proof positive that Robert Evans wasn't the only studio executive from the 70s doing drugs. Crossing Duel with The Exorcist is an idea that could only be dreamed up by someone who'd just rolled and smoked a fat one. How else can you explain why stuff like this got green-lighted, while Orson Welles ended up as a wine spokesman on TV? Still, while Citizen Kane may be one of the greatest films ever made, nobody gets run over by a souped-up, demon-possessed automobile, which is a lot more fun than watching a reporter try to figure out who Rosebud is.
The Car is a terminally weird movie that manages to be entertaining in spite of itself, filled with goofy characters (such as a wife-beater who actually ends up being one of the heroes!), silly dialogue (the scene in which a schoolteacher verbally abuses the car is a great moment in the annals of unintentional humor), and some admittedly well-executed action scenes. The car itself - all black, including the windows - looks like a cross between a Lincoln Continental and a bathtub, and is one mean machine. It flattens folks into gooey pancakes, takes out police cars two-at-a-time by rolling over them, and drives through front windows of houses to nail its prey. The movie stars James Brolin (who would later suffer more misery at the hands of Satan in The Amityville Horror ) as a small-town sheriff trying to deal with a mounting body count while keeping a straight face. I wonder, when he and Barbra Streisand are comparing careers, is he's ever retorted with, "Sure, Yentl is a fine film, but did you ever see my performance in The Car ?" If she had, her likely response would be something like, "Yes, and that's why you'll never appear in one of my movies."

Picture and Sound

The overall picture and sound quality of this movie is better than I expected. Presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, the movie looks pretty good, with only a minor amount of scratches. As for the sound...Anchor Bay has rendered it in 5.1 Dolby Surround, and the movie's audio quality is better than you'd expect

Extras

Not much here. There's a theatrical trailer and a text-only talent bio. Aside from that, there's nothing.

Summary

Similar Movies: Killdozer; Duel; Christine Summary: A guilty pleasure if there ever was one, The Car features chases, crashes and a literally explosive climax that's half chilling, half hilarious. You may want to boost my rating up a notch if you happen to be smoking the same shit as the guys who green-lighted the film.

Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh: The Friendship Edition

Category: DVD Reviews
Disney Studio's may have floundered a bit with their 60s-70s feature output, but the "Winnie the Pooh" shorts made during the same time were brilliantly animated and marvelously entertaining. Though never as ambitious as Disney's full length films, the three shorts made between 1966 & 1974 had (and still have) their own unique look, with characters drawn & voiced so perfect that, even today, they are timeless pop culture icons. Numerous subsequent Saturday morning incarnations, videos & theatrical films have done nothing to diminish the appeal of these films, which are just as endearing today as they were 40 years ago.
