Review

This film is an important one, as it shows just what one man can do if he puts his mind to it in Congress. It's also a true story.

Tom Hanks plays good old boy, Charlie Wilson, a democratic congressman from Texas, affectionately known as "Good Time Charlie". Charlie has few issues in his district and staffs his Washington offices with nothing but babes, but, one night, while hot-tubbing with some strippers, he sees Dan Rather making reports from Afghanistan, reporting on the resistance fighting on the invading Soviet Red Army. He decides to see if he can help and is soon contacted by the sixth wealthiest woman in Texas(Julie Roberts), who persuades Charlie to go after funding and start a war against the Soviets by making appropriations to the resistance fighters. However, the funding must be secret so he recruits a disgruntled CIA operative (Philip Seymour Hoffman) to help channel the weaponry, first through Israel and then to Pakistan.Hoffman's performance is intense and unforgetable, as he steps on just about anybody's toes to get what he wants.

Another outstanding performance that has been overlooked is that of Amy Adams (Enchanted), who plays Charlie's administrative assistant, who has some great ,quick lines throughout the film. It is a fascinating story written by "West Wing" creator Aaron Sorkin, with his usual wit and humor, and snappy, fast paced dialog.

To top it off, this film was directed by Mike Nichols, a man known for making sophisticated comedies throughout his career.

The widescreen picture is sharp and colorful. This is an R rated film, not only for nudity but also for real war images, which you may find disturbing.

Extras include the almost required making of feeaturette but also a look at the real life Congressman ,Charlie WIlso, wh is interviewed and was a consultantfor the movie. Charlie's wild days are now over (he's had a heart transplant) and feelsrather proud of what he accomplished. Its also intersting tonote that thisdisc's languages are English, Russian, and Arabic. Hmm.

Charlie Wilson's War is a smart, sophisticated comedy for an educated audience. The author gets the point across in a subtle manner-hey, we f**ked up the end game and we are paying the price for it today and every day since 9/11. Charlie Wilson accomplished some things President's haven't been able to do for decades and this film is a tribute to his triumph.

Biker Boyz

Category: DVD Reviews
I should start by saying I'm probably one of the few folks who hated "The Fast and the Furious." An empty-headed, by-the-numbers, high-concept movie if there ever was one, it was all flash and window dressing...hot machines, hot babes and hot racing all linked by an unnecessarily stupid story involving a high-jacking ring, mainly because conventional wisdom demands that movies have plots. I would argue movies like this would probably be just as successful WITHOUT a plot; in fact a better movie could have been made which focused exclusively of the street racing subculture. I say all this because "Biker Boyz" tries very hard (but ultimately fails) to be a street-biking version of "The Fast and the Furious." It, too, has hot machines, hot babes and hot racing, all linked to an unnecessarily stupid story, this time involving the main character's attempt to make a name for himself in the world of street-bike racing in the wake of this father's death.

Movie Quotes

Well, I've wrestled with reality for thirty-
five years, Doctor, and I’m happy to state I
finally won out over it.
