Review

It's sort of hard to define a movie like "Cookers." It's touted as a horror film, and does feature some creepy imagery; but after watching, there's ample argument that it is more of a dark & paranoid look into the seedy world of crystal meth addicts. This low budget film is very well made, featuring some good performances, but it also bombards us with MTV-style direction & editing, not to mention it's simply not much fun to watch.
Hector & Dorena (Brad Hunt & Cyia Batten) are two strung-out meth addicts who decide to go into the drug business themselves. After getting hold of everything they need, they set up a meth lab at an old farm house found by Hector's childhood buddy, Merle (Patrick McGaw). Hector & Dorena are already hopelessly addicted to the product they wish to sell, and soon encourage Merle to take the plunge (in an admittedly well-done & realistic sequence). It isn't long before these three start to see ghostly apparitions running about the old house, and we're made to wonder if the apparitions are real, or the products of their paranoid, drug-induced hallucinations. The film does an outstanding job presenting the downward spiral of the three main characters as they continually snort, smoke and shoot-up, these scenes alone are as harrowing as any anti-drug movie you'd care to name. The main problem is we don't like any of these characters to begin with, making it hard for us to sympathize with them when they encounter the 'ghosts' inhabiting the farm house. The performances are all convincing, the set design is suitably claustrophobic, and the dialogue feels authentic, but whether or not you believe what transpires is true supernatural phenomena or drug-induced paranoia, the fact remains that "Cookers" is a depressing way to kill 95 minutes, though the movie does have its supporters (for many of the same reasons I didn't care for it).

Picture and Sound

The movie is presented in a fullscreen format, but as such, the overall image isn't too bad for a low budget flick. The audio is rendered in both 5.1 & 2.0 Dolby Digital, and for the most part, the movie sounds quite good, with little distortion or hissing.

Extras

The only extras included are trailers for other Ardustry releases.

Summary

Though touted as a horror film, "Cookers" may be best appreciated by those looking for a realistic depiction of the effects of crystal meth. Of course, being that I have never tried crystal meth, I may be way off base, but the film seems more successful at depicting the ravages of the drug than offering a compelling horror story.

Xena: Warrior Princess 10th Anniversary Collection

Category: DVD Reviews
What do you do to placate fans when there are no more seasons of a show to box into a DVD collection? Simple...put out a set of the best episodes from every season. Better yet...ask the show's fans which episodes should be included, and that's what Anchor Bay has done. This 7-disc set features episodes apparently voted on a legions of die-hard "Xena" fans, most of whom probably already have every boxed set from the show's six-year run. So why bother to do a collection of like this at all? Probably the same reason Capitol Records released "The Beatles 1"...for the inner geek in all of us, there something inherently cool about compilations, especially those as nicely packaged as this one.
