Review

Comedian Chris Kattan of Saturday Night Live stars in a comedy mafia movie about a veterinarian turned FBI agent. Along the way we see him shoot a gun off with no control of the trigger, snorts cocaine (though accidental), and fight with an angry midget. But is this gag-fest truly funny?
I enjoy Chris Kattan a lot. I think he is hilarious on SNL, and is one of the best comedians on the show, and in real life today, but when you have to sit through an hour and a half of almost pure garbage I wondered why I even liked him. Corky Romano is about a veterinarian named Corky. His family is in the mafia, and when trouble comes, they enlist Corky to join the FBI in order to destroy some valuable information that may lead to his father being sent to jail for a very long time. Of course everything turns out ok, and Corky is an FBI agent where he does wild and crazy things. There are several funny moments in the movie; mainly the part where he accidentally gets cocaine in his system and has odd twitches from then on. Or maybe the scene where he accidentally shoots off a firearm for 5 minutes, but somehow saves the day. While I did chuckle at a few scenes, the rest of the movie truly was garbage. The cast and crew must have decided in the beginning or middle to just goof around the whole time and aim for one of the stupidest movies ever made. Yes, it is that bad. Wanting to turn the T.V. off is a strange feeling, and I haven't had it for longest time, till I popped Corky Romano into my DVD player. But once again, what can we expect? I should have known from the beginning it would have been bad! But I didn't, and suffered, and maybe if you come into the movie expecting the worst, you might be surprised that it isn't.

Picture and Sound

Video: The transfer for the disc is good. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the colors are good, and the blacks are nice and solid. I can't complain with it, which is one of the only things I can't complain about on this disc. Sound: Corky Romano includes a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound and for the most part it is very good. There are only a few scenes where guns go off, and buildings blow up that can do something for the speakers, though I figured it might have been better. Overall, is a nice track.

Extras

The video and audio were good, but the extras are very disappointing. All's that is on the disc are two deleted scenes, and an All Access featurette. The feature runs over 10 minutes and isn't very entertaining. Also included, is the trailer for Bubble Boy. My only question is where is the trailer for Corky Romano? I guess they figured that if you watched the trailer, you would see the only funny scenes in the movie, which would be true cause I have seen the trailer and that's all it is. The extras are pretty bare overall.

Summary

So obviously I didn't like the movie, and the extras are pretty lame. While the video and audio aren't bad, there is no reason to recommend this movie. Just watch the trailer, its way better than actually wasting an hour and a half of your time.

Duel - Collector's Edition

Category: DVD Reviews
I once taught a high school writing class, and as part of a unit on story elements, I used to show the students Duel as an example of those elements in its simplest, but most effective, form. While the kids generally liked the movie and understood the importance of character, setting and plot, I remember one particular kid's comments after the movie was over:: "That was cool," he said. "But I must have missed something. Why was the truck driver trying to kill that guy?" "No reason is given," I replied. "That's what makes it such an effective story." "But who was he? The movie never showed us who he was." A few other students nodded in agreement. I paused while I search for the right words. " Duel isn't about the who or why. It simply puts one man in a situation that he must get out of. Who the driver is, and why he's going after David Mann isn't important." "That's stupid." "Why is it stupid? Do you always feel like everything has to be explained?" "Well, yeah." The kid rolled his eyes like I was an idiot. "Nobody's gonna try and kill a guy for no reason!" Again, more rumblings of agreement from surrounding students. "So you're saying showing what the driver looks like, and giving him a reason for trying to kill the main character would have made it a better movie." The kid nodded. "Sure. It would have made it more realistic." (sigh) ... This is probably why a movie like Duel couldn't be made today. Everyone's always gotta have everything spelled out for them. Maybe it's because I spend a lot of my time around young adults (seemingly the target audience of a lot of Hollywood movies), but it's sad a classic story like Duel seems lost on a lot of people, who've grown up being spoon-fed plot revelations at the ends of the thrillers they see. No one's willing to simply accept a simple scenario and go with it. I would imagine any attempt at a remake would offer some lame-ass explanation for the trucker's motives, in addition to showing what he looked like
